We would have been taking a punt on Cavani though. Everyone could see Suarez' talent, in January 2011 so many of us were saying that we should sign Suarez and that he was top class. It was clear as daylight.

Then when we made CL we could have signed Hazard -

----Sandro--Modric---
Hazard---VDV--Bale--
--------Suarez-------

Thanks Spurs! If only Harry wasn't clueless and Levy wasn't stingy.

suck me off and call me Sally.

that's a front line!

In the Summer window before that, I was hoping/dreaming of a double signing of Suarez and Dzeko (before we signed VDV). I think Suarez & Dzeko would have been epic together, with a mid 4 of Bale Modric Sandro Lennon behind them, though it was Palacios or Hudd in the 1st team not Sandro back then.

Wasn't Sugar offered the chance of signing Zidane?

Well, according to this story, Blackburn could have had him but they did not need him because they had....Time Sherwood already!

http://footyblast.com/2013/07/02/cr...-zinedine-zidane-because-they-didnt-need-him/

Arsenal apparently also turned down the chance to sign him on the cheap.

Back in 1978 Diego Maradona was being offered to English clubs for £600,000....and Sheff United were in negotiations but then pulled out....

Carroll was on 80k at Liverpool not over 100k. He may have chose them over us, but I feel the amount of wages we would have offered for him & Suarez would have been the same or very similar and the directions the 2 clubs were going at that time, as well as the players both clubs have, I'm confident he & Suarez would have chosen us over Liverpool. Cole only chose Liverpool over us due to our rivalry with Chelsea & West Ham. I decision which he admits he regrets.

Also, I remember that ITK & media reports linking us with Suarez had fizzeled out before Liverpool became serious. The way I remember, we were linked heavily in the summer, then again at the start of Jan, the Liverpool were linked, the stories of us being linked were re-hashed (with Liverpool fans claiming we always go after their targets and have no scouts of our own) then Liverpool were linked again and signed him.
I remember when he first signed for Liverpool and there was constant back page stories about him one paper quoting him as being on 100k (although that's likely to be inaccurate)

Same time we had ITK links on our fan websites Liverpool fans had similar ITK and player threads whatever on him which suggests to me they were probably monitoring him for a similar period of time we were scouting him and therefore would have likely gone head to head with us had we made a bid

I suppose who each player would have chose to sign for is going to be a matter of opinion - and you and I disagree on the likely outcome of that at the time

I don't personally buy the notion of Cole not signing for us because of our rivalry with Cheslea - I suspect it was more to do with money and the fact Liverpool were still the bigger club.

same with Suarez, I think they'd have paid more money to him and I think he'd have seen them as the bigger better club than us still at the time. They had been a pretty constant fixture in the CL, mot to mention two time finalists in recent memory (one of those times being victorious)

All we had over the the time was a current CL campaign, which he had at Ajax anyway. I really think that had we had a bid accepted before Liverpool they'd have matched it and he'd have chose them because I believe that the Liverpool of the time were prepared to pay higher wages than us and were still regarded as a superior club to us universally (although the balance since then has swung somewhat) but fair enough this is a matter of opinion

Sweet as. We will just have to agree to disagree. In regards to Cole not signing because of rivalry, he is quoted as saying that much and also said the length of contract (which would have been better financially even if the wages were lower) was bigger with Spurs.

5 year deal? Eff me
Yeah, I loved the way we played under HR but some transfer decisions were baffling. No to Suarez, 5 year offer to Cole, trying to buy Phil Neville.

If we had got Cole, I bet HR would have said no to VDV as they are "too similar".

He got the best out of what we had for a time but he held us back by limiting our potential with his transfer market decisions and we missed a few opportunities to really cement ourselves as a top force

I remember we had diego pretty much done and dusted, then santos said they'd not release him until the January window. we, typically, responded with something like 'fook off, we won't be pushed around like that', and, naturally, after January had come and go we were still playing with the likes of johnnie Jackson, Michael Brown, and sean Davis in the middle of the pitch.

the one who 'got away' that really killed me, though, was Michael Carrick. what'd he want? an extra 5k a week? that's what, a half-mill a year? how many half-mills did we squander over the next few years? with keane and berbatov up front, how would that have gone?

I thought Carrick left as Man Utd came in and it was a once in a life time opportunity to play for them? You think we gave him 5k a week more he would have turned them down?

He certainly too the shackles off out more creative players and allowed them to express themselves more. He could have done more with the players he had though, like actually playing Krancjaer when VDV wasn't fit. I reckon we would have done much better with a DOF when Harry was in charge.

I could've sworn that jol complained that he wanted that much more to keep carrick, but that the club wouldn't break the wage structure to do it. it may be nonsense, to be fair, but I know that I heard that somewhere, as I've been bitter about it ever since.

I've never heard that before.
