There was a magical little soundbite from David Pleat on Radio 1's god awful "Newsbeat" this morning along the lines of:

"We had a policy of a core of British players, then when Arnesen came in that went out the window and he signed a lot of mediocre players..."

Anybody else hear it? It almost made me crash my car at the sheer hypocrisy of it all!

To be fair, when we lined up against Liverpool for Santini's first game there were a few players no one had ever heard of, some of whom departed fairly soon afterwards... Hamdaoui? that da Silva guy? (I think it was da Silva) and of course there was Timmy Toubs...

Hammy is one of the top goalscorers in the Eredivisie this season.

Sour grapes, I think.

Indeed... tho tbf Pleaty did also sign us a few decent players...

Could never understand why El Hammy wasn't given a crack at the first team at all, I guess Jol knows better than we do, but he did fairly well on loan at Derby did he not?

I'd put Zeige and Gardner on the "Good" list personally...

Infact, I'm starting to think that Arensen might've had a worse record than Pleat?! Eek Someone slap me and tell me I'm crazy!

Personally I don't think Pleat can possibly argue that we had a better side under him than we did under Santini/Jol. However, I certainly think he can argue that we had a better side under him than we have now!!

When did Pleat leave?

How did he sign Lennon when he was only signed in the summer before 05/06? Arnesen had already been here and been suspended by then

IIRC Pleat identified Lennon and did most of the ground work (sorting out contracts n persuading him to come and whatever) before he put pen to paper under Arnesen?

Yeah I don't think Pleaty did that bad a job IMHO.

Considering the budgets and limitations placed upon him.

I just wish he supported Hoddle more.
