"When you play in different positions you add to your game and so gain better tools to be a better player."

This.

This is a bit strange if we're happy to sell Fazio. Surely he's needed as a CB?

"I made that decision from the start of pre-season, we needed to give the option to Eric Dier to play. He played well in midfield and was comfortable in that position," said Pochettino, who takes his side to Leicester on Saturday.

"He played it before in the national team, (when he was younger) in Portugal they play like a centre-back or holding midfielder - and I am very happy with his performance."

Pochettino added: "Eric's skill is he can play in different positions in the pitch, he started last season as a full-back and scored in the first two games.

Hmm. He wasn't happy playing RB, why would he be happy at DM?

Agree, he wasn't happy at RB, but as Poch says, he has played in midfield before and it seems more as a variation of his CB role.
Personally I don't think he's done too badly. He's young, he can still develop, he gets his head up, he plays it simple. Once he gets more confident, he'll become a lot more comfortable and a lot more tenacious.
Don't get me wrong, i'd still like a recognised DM, but as a backup fair play to the lad.

I did think last season he had a reasonably good level of attacking threat when he played RB. He scored some goals and got some assists.
Maybe in a few years time he'll have moved even further forward.

He is basically playing the centre-half role - dropping between the central defenders in a back 5. And going up for the corners (with some success).
It is not such a different role.

But he is no ordinary CH - he has shown he has skill on the ball and can pick an intelligent pass. But he not going to develop over night into the premiership level DM we need.
His instinct on the ball will be to pass back to a defender, rather than get some forward momentum going ....

just like all our other players then.

Poch is clearly going to give him a go. Its very much a squad game and Eric can be deployed, as we know, in a couple of defensive positions. Very useful when deciding who, and who not, to have on the bench. And both TA and JV can play full back.
Diversity in football, if only it was that easy in life....

Good decision from Poch, I can see him mastering this position and bring a goal threat throughout. Deserves to be in the first 11 anyway.

Absolute joke of a club. Lone striker and now a CB playing as a DM. This is all going to end in tears, and not tears of fucking joy.

When Dier came to Spurs I read a lot of articles about what a great technical player and prospect he was, I see no reason why he can't grow into a brilliant central DM given some support and time to make the odd mistake, which unfortunately given the position will be difficult to hide from

Dier and Alli could be our cm midfield two for many years to come I think.
