Pochettino: New stadium means we cannot afford to make expensive mistakes in transfer market

Interesting article by Ben Pearce - he made a mistake with Osvaldo, any signing over 20 million needs to have an impact like Bale, Ronaldo or Messi, etc...

Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham’s stadium project means they cannot afford to make expensive mistakes in the transfer market and must spend their money astutely.

Harry Kane has been Spurs’ only specialist striker in the first half of the season and it would be a big risk for the club to continue into February without recruiting another forward.

However, Pochettino has pointed out that Arsenal’s transfer budget was affected by their move to Emirates Stadium for many years, and he has suggested that the Lilywhites will only spend in excess of £15million on a player if they can be certain it represents good value.

“For me when you spend more than £15m, £16m or £18m you must first have a player that brings good things like good behaviour, discipline, responsibility, professionalism,” he said. “This is first, and he also has to have enough quality to improve the squad.

“In this case, for us at Tottenham, we are in a different project than a few years ago. We are in the process of building a new stadium and you know the period that another club experienced. For us it’s important to get it right.

“If we spend £20m, £25m or £30m we need to be sure that this type of player has the kind of impact that Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo has for Real Madrid, or [Lionel] Messi or Neymar for Barcelona.

“We’d need to be speaking about a player that is our best player and he’d need to help us to achieve a lot of things. It’s impossible to sign players for this amount and then have to wait for them to perform.”

Asked if Tottenham are likely to spend those kinds of sums in this transfer winter window, Pochettino replied: “No I think that’s not our project, it’s not the case today. Maybe in the future.”

Pochettino admits he has made mistakes with previous recruits – notably when he signed Dani Osvaldo for a club record fee at Southampton.

The Italian striker head-butted team-mate Jose Fonte in training and moved to Fiorentina on loan less than six months after his arrival. He was released by the Saints last July, halfway through his four-year contract.

Experiences like that mean Pochettino places a high importance on the character of his players and, having worked hard to cultivate a positive, hard-working atmosphere in Tottenham’s dressing room, he is anxious not to disrupt it by making a hurried purchase.

Asked if he has ever regretted a signing, the head coach said: “Yes, because I am not God. In football you can always make mistakes.

“Because of different circumstances, sometimes you can make a mistake – in my tactics, in my vision of the opponent or our team or my selection, and signing players too.

“I can say to you now, in this case, I think it was our mistake [to sign Osvaldo] because of what he showed after. You know the problem with Jose Fonte and in this moment you realise it was a mistake.

“I can recognise that and Osvaldo, to be fair, he recognised it was a big mistake for him to come, and for us to sign him. I am very honest with that.

“We took a decision to put him out of the changing room because discipline, good behaviour and always being kind with your team-mates, it’s very important for us. It was unacceptable behaviour and for that we were very strong with him.

“It’s a consequence of our decisions that we have a good changing room now [at Tottenham]. It’s not magic. We have worked very hard to try to build good relationships between the players, to create with all the staff and everyone at the club a very good level of training, discipline and mentality, and this is important to keep now.

“I’ve been asked about Gareth Bale. He is a player that is welcome in the changing room because we know him, or if we had the possibility to sign Messi or Neymar, it’s impossible to say no.

“The problem is if you bring in a player who is a normal player and not a good guy. Then you say, ‘for what?’ For the sake of it? They have to have the right profile and enough quality to help us to improve the squad.”

Interesting read, I'm not sure this rules out big money signings though. He's basically just saying we can't afford to waste money, but then when is it ever acceptable to waste money on shit players?

And hasn't Levy always promised that the stadium won't effect transfers?

Rules out spending 20 mill plus this window though. Did we really bid 25 mill August? I agree that statement rules out Berahnio esp as the amount needed would need to be one of our best players he says

Well it has as we've spent less than anyone in the whole league the last few years

Have to say, I don't think I will be overly disappointed if we pass up Berahino. But if would be good for Harry to have some back up.

I understand what he is saying completely but is it really that difficult to find a player under that price point that would be a good fit with the team and a good backup to Kane so he can have a break without burning him out? Also didn't we spend £20M+ on Son? I know it's early days but I really don't see him being on the same level as Bale or Ronaldo (not writing it off completely, just seems unlikely) Bottom line is we have a great shot at doing something special right now, if there was any time to find someone special it would be now.

Also it seems the passage about behaviour is directed towards SB, that would certainly line up with ITK saying Poch isn't interested anymore, maybe his behaviour with West Brom has put us off.

I must admit it is refreshing to finally have a coach/manager that is trying to change the dna of the club rather than just focusing on week to week results, I have heard the word "project" so many times in football but with Poch I truly believe it and trust it.

Great article.

I'd be amazed after reading that if we signed Berahino.

This isn't the first time Poch has talked about character, in fact it's been ovious ever since he kicked Ade, Lennon, Capoe et al in to touch that he placed strong emphasis on the attitude of individual players and the overall team spirit. The links with SB have persisted, however, persisted to the point where it's obvious that Poch does want to sign him, he said as much in a press conference at the end of the last window. Why? Like most, I really don't understand it. I guess Poch has received reports that the player's attitude is not such a massive problem, or if it is he believes he's a player/character he can mould. Either way, it doesn't seem worth the gamble. High price, high risk, for what? A decent prospect? I really don't see why we're still persisting with it.

Yeah every comment from Poch is talking in the long term. I really do think he's looking to stay with us for a fair few years. If he keeps this young team progressing and playing with this style I have no issues whatsoever with that. I think we might finally have our man.

Another thing to like Poch is he is man enough and big enough to admit his mistakes, unlike the whiner Maureen who always shifts the blame to someone else.

Nice piece. Good bloke, rare to see expressions of modesty in such circles. Dressing room harmony with attitudes around like sterling, bera and some of those poch has already shown the door to far from easy to maintain.

But as if levy is writing his script, you simply cant buy the mega players he mentioned for the money he mentions. Certainly not when they're already matured. By definition we have to buy someone for 15 to 20 tops and then throw him in alongside kane and or instead of Kane especially in cup games.

We need more variety against defensive teams. Another line leader who's good in the air, yeah, or fox in the box speedster. Unlikely we will find it all in one player. But we need to bring in this player now and begin to mould him. They've had at least nine months to assess the market and need to be decisive , back their own judgement.

We are also in two cups and whilst son proved he's an option away from home on the break the other night he's not what we need as a point man. Neither is Chad, and neither is njie.

kanesllike a top of the range suv, wear and tear accumulating, needs a service. But when he's off road we get given a smart.

Get it done. Tottenham.
