Very interesting and I'm glad he says he was unhappy with the Stoke performance - we really weren't all that last week despite the scoreline.

N'Koudou nowhere near ready for the first team.

No fucker asked about Wimmer! :banghead:

Damn...I can envision the steam still wafting out of his ears as he gives that interview.

He's not happy us with not being at our best, despite results. I like that. A lot.

He can chastise and blame the players all he wants but ultimately it is his responsibility to get them performing. The fact he said that he would have subbed the lot shows that he is not performing to level he needs to be.

He does blame himself.

Did you watch the whole presser? He took full responsibility and was very honest. He doesn't write the headlines - all he can do is be honest.
Poch is a top manager and a top man.

I know but the headline is about the players and his sound bites such subbing them all will always draw attention to them as opposed to him.

No sure waht your point is. He shouldn't say anything because of reporters then?

He controls press conferences,he controls what he says and when he says comments about the players lacking passion or he would have subbed the lot then then those statements will always make the headlines over anything else. Either is incredibly naive to the British media or it is deliberate and I believe it was the latter. It's the classic deflection manoeuvre and also an attempt to get a response from the players. It's a pet hate of mine with any manager. When the whole side plays poorly like Wednesday then that is down to the manager, he should take ownership of that, it's his job to get the players motivated, it is his job to get them performing.

I think Poch wanted to get the point across that the performance levels were unacceptable and for the players to know that but he also did continue to blame himself claiming responsibility for the loss. Media will always print what they think will generate more clicks regardless.

And very much still learning. Which people easily forget.

I think we overestimate what a manager can do to motivate players.

There's a lot a manager can do to influence a player's state of mind, but as in all walks of life, the effect can only really be catalytic, not fundamental. A great manager can certainly have a motivational effect, but ultimately the real motivation that permanently affects performances has to come from the players themselves.

If a bunch of players are not motivated by a first Champions League match in years, or ever for some of them, in front of a national record crowd, I very much doubt that there's much that a manager could say to alter that in a fundamental way.

But I don't think the problem was a lack of motivation anyway. I think it was a lack of form. I have no idea what causes or cures that. I expect confidence has a lot to do with it, but that's quite different from motivation.

Yes it's not n exact science. I suspect at this level of competition a team only needs to be 1 or 2% off to be the difference. Managers I guess do all they know to try to get that extra little bit which is often, like all sports, probably in your head. Poch clearly works the players physically; makes sure that they all know what they need to do etc., but the last little bit needs something more. To me most of the side look a little off their best. Maybe the collective confidence of a good performance against decent opposition or just maybe winning a few games against anyone will lift the players ... let's hope it starts now as I think City apart all the teams have more weaknesses than we do

He makes it quite clear he was responsible and asked questions of himself as part of a collective group to do better.
A manager can only prepare a player so much, the players need to perform when they cross the white line, and the result was not down to the manager lack of preparation to cope with Monaco, it was too many individuals errors.

Maybe you chose the wrong wording to explain your point but to say the manager needed to "motivate" a player for CL game in front of 85,000? Seriously?

I've only watched the first few minutes so far but Pochettino first and foremost took responsibility himself, repeated several times that he took responsibility first and foremost.

Wimmer has been conspicuous in his absence in recent weeks, despite signing a new five-year contract in July.

The Austrian was impressive last season when covering for the injured Vertonghen but Pochettino has preferred 18-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers for his bench so far this term.

“If you watch again the game against Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan in pre-season, I think that maybe he deserves to play in the starting 11,” Pochettino said of the youngster.

“He can give to the team better quality than another player. All my decisions are because I think a player can give more things than another player. It’s for that that I picked him on the bench.

“Kevin arrived late on the pre-season, was injured remember, he didn’t play in Australia, and Cameron did very well."

Hmm yeah not sure I believe that one second Poch.an untested youth player can give the team better quality than Wimmer cause he was ok in pre season friendlies. otherwise eriksen and kane wouldn't even make the bench right now either
Wimmer obviously annoyed him somehow

I like the fact that he has been very honest about how we have started games and that we need to improve on this. A number of games we came flying out of the traps and killed teams off quickly, I hope to see that tomorrow, if not we may have some issues with players taking too long to get into their groove.

We could easily have found ourselves behind against Stoke and could have been sucker-punched by Palace, so I'm glad Poch has noted this and is expecting more.
