An interesting read and the last paragraph kind of sums up the Premier League and also how we were viewed in the past few years. You can excel and break in for a while but, ultimately, money wins.

Well, yes but they didn't lose because they lacked money.

They lost because their form nosedived. Either the first 31 matchdays along with 37 matchdays last season were outliers, or the final two matchdays of this one along with the final matchday of last season where outliers.

It's true that they're where they should be after 38 games. But at the same time they need to have a look at why both seasons saw them freeze at the last minute.

Seems like a form and mental issue, not a money one.

Judging on their performances vs us and Newcastle it was all down to nerves.

In the final I think they managed vs Chelsea as they allowed them to just have the ball and stayed compact - Chelsea hardly got at them either which is a problem under Tuchel. In a final you don't have to worry about what goes on elsewhere, just focus on the game but I think they started to get nervous in the league when Chelsea and Liverpool picked up form.

I didn’t know how I felt about the finishing below Arsenal but out of the ECL. Have to say now it’s done, I’m happy with the outcome.

who knows, we may just win the bloody thing and that would give us a boost and a Europa league spot the following year (if we needed it).

The only good thing about the ECL is the UEFA coefficient, although I'm not even sure how big of a factor it is.

It's a pretty huge impact as we really don't want the doughnut in our coefficient for five full seasons, that would badly affect our seeding in any European tournament we play all the way to 2026.

When Sevilla won the EL last year they got 26 coefficient points for the 19/20 season, only Bayern, PSG and Leipzig, ie three of the CL semi finalists, got more. If we win the ECL I assume we'd get one of the highest points totals for the season as it is as simple as 2 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat for all tournaments.

I don’t think the coefficient should be overlooked, yes we think it’s a Mickey Mouse tournament but not being in europe could have big ramifications later down the line.
We are currently ranked 15th (dropped 3 places from last year) in Europe with arsenal 10th. Arsenal not being involved at all will see them drop down that table and depending how serious we take the new comp and how far we get will determine how far we can move up it.

Especially as that 16/17 season drops away where we got 10 points and the scum got 19. There’s the swing right there. I’m assuming the points must be less for the third tier competition though, although I’m not certain.

Well there's no difference in points allocation between CL and EL, so to then make the ECL points allocation less just won't make sense, but I would like to know.

You get a little bit more for the CL than EL but not significantly. I imagine the ECL will at the very least also have two points for a win and one for a draw, so if we were to manage to win all 13 games from the group stage starts up to the final that's 26 points just for the wins.

It's only a major factor if you're right on the cusp on being included. Guess where we are? :)

I read this months ago actually, that it would really benefit a few clubs likes us, but this was when JM was still here and we had high(er) hopes.

But whichever way you spins it, winning matches in Europe can't be a bad thing.

It's just about how we approach it, if we can approach it in a way where our first team isn't looking leggy on a sunday having travelled to the ends of europe and we're able to really focus on developing tactically in training through the week then it won't be a problem.

If we're playing sunday, having to spend 2 days recovering, 1 day preparing for the ECL, playing thursday, recovering friday and 1 day preparing for the game sunday then it's going to be a problem.
