Struggling to see how we can have sandro, paulinho and dembele as a midfield trio. I know its early days but we need to be getting holtby, lamela and eriksen involved as we are lacking creativity.
So, for me paulinho and sandro next game with eriksen or holtby playing further forward, lamela on the left and Townsend right....

Dawson is the biggest problem, shouldn't have played today . , slow and always exposed, then lets start on the left back...

I read the whole thread and personally I still think its knee jerk - that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it as you are to yours

How is it a knee jerk?

It's a totally reasoned set of problems to be solved. It's not suggesting any doom and gloom.

We're on a football forum. Would you rather we talked about the good weather or something else?

We've just lost to Arsenal and seeing where we need to improve.

Have your opinion but please try to actually contribute something interesting.

Yes arsenal parked the bus. But that's more points dropped to another team that parked the bus. It's the same tactic that we always lose points to. Pretty soon all the teams will park the bus and hit us on the break and we'll look vulnerable with our high line. We all knew Walcott would be the threat today against our high line and we failed to nullify him. When the opposition has pace like arsenal perhaps we need a change of tactics...?

We still had nearly 60% of the possession at the Emirates. That suggests we are very good at regaining possession.

we do need a plan b and a plan c, something that i'm sure they are working on!

Sad to say but they let us dominate possession. They played the perfect counter-attacking game and it worked. Palace did the same thing but they didn't have the quality to punish us.

When a team with no creative players and a high line comes to your ground then letting them attack you is the perfect plan. They killed us on the counter with their pace and for all our possession we created next to nothing. If the game was a few months away and Lamela and Eriksen were playing we would have seen a very different tactical set up.

They had much better chances and were it not for lloris we could have lost by 3. They soaked up the pressure and hit us on the break time and time again. We need a better tactic for park the bus and counter attack teams.

3 games and likes of Chadli created virtually nothing. 3 games and likes of Hazard or Robben already had a reputation for entire league. Chadli was bought as a sub for Bale, now Bale gone we need a player of similar level. Brian Ruiz of Fulham was a more lethal player than him (35 goals in 65 games compared with 25 goals in 84 games) and he is by no means top class in EPL.

Fair enough

1. Soldado played as lone striker for Valencia plenty of times, the main thing is what we have always lacked and that is the final ball. This we have hopefully addressed in eriksen and lamela.
2. Dembele is the attacking one. Paulinho is a box to box midfielder linking play from end to end and chipping in all over, although personally I suspect that dembele is going to be one of the highest profile players to suffer from the influx and will struggle to get in the first team once we are up to full speed.
3. His positional sense was no worse than vertnghen and Dawson today IMO and even though we have spent serious money a lot of the new boys are young with a lot of learning and development still to come like rosé.
4. This point is not really a problem to solve it is just a fact.
5. Again, IMO , this is not a problem to solve but just an observation. Obviously Avb has to make it work and hopefully it will.

I just think it is too early to pass any sort of judgement on any of the new players (including rose and Townsend) until at least 10 games as you said, then we will have an idea of who is settling and who isn't- even that is a bit soon . Avb himself said after the game today that there has been no time to properly work on making the team gel and until they get to know each other and avbs preferred system we haven't a clue how it will be.

In fairness my post was possibly a bit knee jerk in itself but it does my head in seeing some of the posts after every loss on here, especially so early in the season with so many new players, there was even someone talking about needing to upgrade chadli n the itk thread last night when he has only been here for 2 minutes, anyway we all want the same thing and that is success for our club :)

Before today only Hazard had created more chances than Chadli in the Premier League so far this season.

I think 4-3-3 with that midfield could work very well if we had a powerful focal point. seems like we haven't figured out a way of playing yet with the players we've got. I like Soldado and still think he'll do well especially with Lamela and Eriksen behind but I wouldn't mind seeing someone come in, up top with some real presence tomorrow especially if Ade's off. Not sure playing a high line with Dawson at the heart of defence is a particular good idea as well.

With the speed of the Goons counter attacks and their pressing our middle 3 seemed to mesh into the same player, it got to the point where i couldn't see any definition of who was doing what job.
I think they all lost their heads a bit, a player with a different characteristic was needed, not 3 players with similar characteristics being given different instructions.

Lamela is a lot nearer to being bales replacement than chadli is and for me he hasn't done too bad so far (as darth vega said) with glimpses that he could be a good bit better.

Basically against a team with pace like arsenal, we shouldn't play a high line. It's suicidal. Walcott has now destroyed an AVB high line 3 times across 3 seasons at the Emirates (once against avb's Chelsea). I love avb but would expect him to have learnt his lesson by now.
