Promoting some left sided talent from within?

Just seen another link on newsnow (fansfc so extreme pinch of salt!) linking us with Adam Johnson.

Over the past couple of weeks we've been linked with Diego Capel along with Johnson a few times and it makes me then wonder about Danny Rose.

On the Spurs website he's down as an attacking midfielder and I believe when he plays for reserves or our youth team he players centrally attacking with Andros Townsend on the left wing.

Is Danny Rose a left winger? Would people possibly prefer us to see us promote from within (yeah I know bought from Leeds but we've been coaching him since) rather than splashing cash on an external player which could be used for other positions.

What's this Andros Townsend like? Is he capable of perhaps breaking through?

I would just be nice to maybe see some of reserve players make more of an impact on the first team rather than having to buy all the time.

What do other people think?

I would bet on Rose, Pekhart and Archibald-Henville being the youngsters the club think most likely to make it based on them being chosen for the kit unveiling.

Rose has played in the middle a few times for reserves and academy from reports I've read so I would believe that he's more of a Gamst type left midfielder rather than a Lennon type left winger. But I've never seen him so I could be quite far from the truth.

It would be awesome if he was involved in first team duties in pre-season friendlies and took the step up next season but I for one think that's very unlikely.

Townsend I know nothing about.

Rose was a left winger/supporting striker for Leeds and a striker for England boys. He is very much in the Lennon mould but with a sweet cross/shot too.

Considering LW is one of our troublesome positions it surprises me that he's played as a striker and in CM more so than on the left. I would've thought they'd be priming him for a left wing role, and I do believe he's the kind of player who could make an impact on the first team very soon. He's definitely ahead of Taarabt in my book.

That's been to improve his all round game, not hone him for a different position. Like playing King in midfield improved his ability on the ball, for instance.

Rose is only 17. He's also had no real first team experience. That means his development is still a year or so behind where Lennon's was when we signed him from Leeds (who'd had 18 months in their first team then).

Perhaps, like Taarabt, it's time to loan him out to a lower prem club next year. He's not ready for more yet though.

Rose also never played a game for Leeds btw, only their academy team.

So Rose is more a left winger / midfiedler than an attacking central midfielder then?

It would be good to loan him out for more experience - only difficulty is what do we do in interim years? If we bought Capel for instance he'd probably never get a sniff in future seasons...

I would rather keep Rose, See if we can get him on the bench for some games next year and take it from there.

What i dont want to see is him going to a team like Fulham or Bolton and trusting them to develop this youngster.

I just think he would get alot more from staying at the club than going out on loan.

I'd like us to keep Rose next season and maybe see him get a few games in the carling cup, while also being a regular for the reserves. Then evaluate at the end of next season

The problem is that you need to be playing to be tested. Keeping in the reserves won't hlp him improve so much, and if he's just sitting on the bench it's not good enough. I would imagine that had Taarabt been on loan and playing regularly he'd be better for it.

That's the problem I'm getting at.

If we were to buy Diego Capel for example who is 20 years old and more ready for 1st team football, he would presumably be our long-term left wing option.

Now I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but that would then mean that Rose would never stand a chance meaning another exciting English youngster slips through our net.

It's a toughie...

for once we agree :-|.

i strongly feel that if you keep a player like rose only needs 1 season in the reserves or they become a bit stale and loose that spark. he has had a good year so next year lets push him on and get a loan or more involved in the first team.

i would liken it to phil ifil, who played in the reserves for about 3 or so years. ifil always played above his year and when he made his debut at 17 that would of been the perfect time to continue his development on loan

im all for sending the most promising guys to championship for short spells at least

o'hara gained a lot from going on loan but he was that bit older than the likes of Rose

Yea I know, I went to see him in a Leeds reserve game as the vast majority of my friends are Leeds fans.

I'm hoping that having 7 available subs next season means that we will see the likes of Pekhart, Rose etc make the bench more often, at least then if we are winning comfortably or losing badly they will get a chance maybe in the last 15-20 mins to gain some experience and to show if they can make an impact. A bit like Sears at W Ham, i'm not sure why they weren't given a chance in the last couple of months. If anything they would've given more effort than most of the 1st teamers!
