The notion of an assist is a relatively recent one and something that perhaps was influenced by statistic crazy Americans. But an assist in football does not provide the unequivocal information about a player's performance that a home run or an RBI does in baseball. Rather ludicrously, a player making a 2 yard pass to someone who then scores a 30 yard screamer is granted an assist, which is given the same weight as someone beating 10 players then setting up an open goal for someone.

So I propose a new system to be used on this board so players relative performances - vis-a-vis their creativity - can be accurately stated and thus discussed.

My suggestion is for there to be Gold, Silver and Bronze Assists.

A Gold Assist would be doing something truly exceptional that created a goal when before it being done there did not seem much chance of a goal being scored. Beating several players, a pinpoint 60 yard defence splitting ball etc.

A Silver Assist would be correctly executing a pass or cross to a high standard that a competent footballer would be expected to execute - an accurate cross that finds an intended target, a short pass from just outside the box that find a player running onto it etc,

A Bronze Assist would be all others - a corner or free kick delivered to an area rather than a specific player, getting a penalty etc.

Also, I think there should be such a thing as a Self-created goal - for example Kane Vs Chelsea or Townsend Vs Swansea and for that player to be awarded the respective assist for the goal himself.

Not knocking the idea, but what about the quality of goals.

Is a 2 yard knock in from a teammates precise pass the same as running half the pitch with the ball round half the opposition team and their goalkeeper to score.

Or what about great passes - but the recipient blasts over the bar when he should have scored. No recogntion of any kind of assist - but some sites measure 'key passes'

Pinpoint 60 yard pass? How could you tell the difference between that and a hoof up the pitch?

Or maybe a really special goal (a Rabona, back heel or overhead) can be worth 3 points, from outside the area 2 points, etc.

The latter would be classified as a self-created goal and the scorer awarded a Gold Assist.

There could also be the same categories for chances created but not scored - Gold Chance Created, Silver Chance Created etc.

What about a 'Zamora assist' for when you ping an amazing 60 yard pinged to a sticker who then falls over his own dick and misses?......

Surely there's irony in blaming "crazy Americans" for possibly creating the 'assist' category, yet suggesting we name these things like "Bronze assists"?

Statistics based on performance all lie anyway, as unequivocally proven by a Mr Modric.

I was thinking of going on to Dragon's Den with my idea. My business model involves creating a website where fans can vote on whether as assist should be a Gold, Silver or Bronze one, or they can ring a premium rate number to do so.

There would be a special forum where fans can have discussions like: "I think x player is better than y because, although y has more overall assists, x has more Silver and Gold ones".

And every month there'll be a competition for the best Gold Assist and the player who wins will get a special trophy named after Michel Platini.

Perhaps assigning points to them as well: say 3 for gold, 2 for silver and 1 respectively so by season end, assists points could be tallied.

Lets not take a pointless stat and over complicate it further.

Stats are just for the media to spin whatever is on their agenda at the time. Fans know the true value of their players to the team without the need for stats even pretty coloured ones.

It's not really ludicrous though is it...same logic applies to goals: they all count the same.

The player who scores the 30 yard screamer has one goal to his name, as does the player who scored the tap in.

Perhaps a simplified 'assist of the month' competition could be more interesting.
