Yeah, I think it’ll be too little too late. The time for the big nations to speak up was when this was awarded, their silence until now has been deafening.

Also, how many of these players will put their money where their mouth is and boycott this sham of a World Cup?
You're absolutely right, Tucks.

This is going to sound like whataboutism, but it's a genuine thought-experiment:

How many in world football would have stayed as silent as they have been if, say, Iran had been awarded the World Cup?

That's not me in any way defending the regime in Iran - my response to them being awarded the World Cup would be exactly the same as it is for Qatar getting it and I'm of an Iranian background.

But we're talking in both instances of a brutal regime, that funds international terrorism, with scant regard for human rights, presided over by a nominally-theocratic ruling class who salt the wealth of the country away for themselves while a vast swathe of the people they rule over live in either abject poverty or slavery. But can you imagine the outcry if Iran had been given the World Cup?

The terms should be the same - if you're a brutal, totalitarian nation that tramples on human rights, you don't get to partake in the gifts of civilisation, like staging a world sporting event.

I believe FIFA do a tally have laws about that, like a list of criteria you have to meet to be eligible to host a WC. Trouble is they've just conveniently ignored all of them because they're more bothered about money.

So much talk of issues with human rights and owners gaining position in society through their ill-gotten gains. This is a chance to see if people will step up.

Players taking a personal stand by abstaining, people boycotting sponsors or refusing to attend can all play a part.

I've ruled myself out of the England squad and won't be flying to Qatar.

I'm not watching the qualifiers and I will not watch the world cup. It's a farce and I'm sticking to my principles.

I wish I was the same. I'm strongly against this but come the world cup I know I'll be in the pub watching.

But a successful demonstration against this needs leadership and someone with influence to take a stand. I'm just not sure anyone is going to step up.

Money talks. No one with any influence is going to step up because pockets have been sufficiently lined. If they were, they’d have done so already. The Qatari’s & FIFA were smart in this sportswashing bribe fest. Also, theres the fact that a far worse bunch has just completed a takeover of a fairly massive club.

The Saudi’s & the PL were not smart in this sportswashing venture. The only reason theres so much unrest in the PL over the Saudi takeover is because they didnt sufficiently line the pockets so clubs are upset. They now want new leadership that will line their pockets then they will shut up and welcome their new overlords. Clubs, players & sport organizations dont care about human rights. They care about money.

Yeah for sure. But it all starts with people taking a stand for what they think is right or wrong personally. At least it makes you feel better.

The Premier League will pause after the weekend of 12-13 November next season and resume on Boxing Day to accommodate the World Cup, it was confirmed on Thursday.

The season will start on 6 August and stop after the 16th round of matches for the Qatar tournament, which is due to kick off on 21 November. The league will resume eight days after the World Cup final, with the concluding round of simultaneous games on 28 May 2023.

Christmas world cup is actually pretty good.
Whoever wins it, they may as well just call it Christmas early and give people a few days off. The chances of any work being done in the week between winning the World Cup and Christmas Day are non-existent!

Just a week's break is absolutely ridiculous, and I don't see how they're going to manage to play either cup or complete the European fixtures.

It's a farce and a disgrace that FIFA had every chance to correct when Qatar broke the contract and said they had to host in winter, but of course all they say were the dollars and probably a chance to stick it to UEFA by interrupting their calendar as much as possible.

The biggest national newspaper here, VG, did a good piece in English about the arrest. The translation from Norwegian isn't perfect but the piece is still good.

And right the same day we had Infantino spouting utter bullshit.

I can say that my workplace, TV 2, are joint rights holders with NRK for the tournament (think TV 2 as ITV and NRK as BBC) and we are very concerned about sending anyone to Qatar at all, especially now Norway won't be in it because that would've forced our hand a bit.

This has caused such a stir last night and this morning in the Norwegian media and all the way up to the top of the football federation and the wider sports federation. It's such a shame our team wasn't good enough to get there because I seriously think statements and actions would've been so much more impactful had we got there.

Norway would have been bound and gagged. No way that the national team would ever gone near the pitch with any political merch.
