Pat was set to sign for Ipswich but that fell through when one of their players was seriously injured so they had to alter their transfer targets. It was at that point that Terry Neill stepped in and offered Pat the chance to sign for Arsenal.

On Clemence - he served Spurs well but I always think of him as a Liverpool legend but not a Tottenham Legend.

You have to remember that it was a different situation to nowadays, we were looking to release Jennings as Daines had been playing well and letting him go to Arsenal was because he deserved to be treated well, also arsenal were not a top club so we did them a favour too.
Neil took Willy young though and that was sneaky, also as someone else posted Neill was a shit and a shit manager, ended up running a pub I believe. Any hate your Dad has for Neill is perfectly deserved.

I never took to Clemence.

I was 12 when we won the 1981 FA Cup Final and it was pretty much my first memory of Spurs winning something. I couldn't understand why the manager could even consider replacing one of the team who'd won the Cup, let alone the man they called 'Elastic'. I thought Milija was great. I remember him reaching for shots like Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four in goal (although this may not have actually happened and it may just be that he was a tad more athletic than Barry Daines ever was).

And they replaced him with this guy who was so old that Liverpool didn't want him any more. My Dad told me he was really good and so we settled down to watch his debut (the Charity Shield in 1981) and he cocked up a corner to let Villa take the lead (2:15 on the video). "See", I said "he's rubbish" and I never changed my view. I know most see him as one of the great England and Tottenham goalkeepers, but I never forgave him taking Aleksic's place, nor that mistake.

Still, I'm over it now.

Mostly.

The goal he let in against Barcelona was awful. Got us knocked out of the ECWC when we were easily the best team in it IIRC. Barcelona were utter thugs ion that game too. Forget if it was 82 or 83. Still was a very good keeper for us though.

It was 82, I was at that game when Clemence let it through his hands above his head. It was pissing down but still poor keeping from a nothing shot.
Barca were animals and renowned for it back then. I can clearly remember Roberts going on one of his marauding runs when a Barca player slid in to tackle him and buried his studs in Robbo's guts!
We were going mental because the red was giving us nothing.

Then we equalised and we all went mental again!

Cracking night

i was standing directly behind Clemence in the Paxton when that goal went in.

I was up the shelf, gutted it finished 2-2 and in the end if I recall they finished with 9 men, they definitely didn't play pretty football those days.

on Jennings the day he left my heart was broken, and going to Arsenal definitely didn't help, but as a 13year old I never really thought of the why's and wherefores.

still see Pat walking in Hertford occasionally and always say hello, and was gutted just before Xmas an account customer of mine sent me a job to take him to Stansted, but I wasn't available:(

he could pick it out the air with 1 hand, land and still hold it. he got me on the end real of MotD when they used one of his fabulous 1 handed diving saves and as he landed they froze the frame (my claim to fame)

I think you mean Mark Kendall rather than Howard... :0)

Always remember the night in the Park Lane when we were fighting to go back up to Div 1. Think we were playing Halifax or someone, believe it or not.

Anyway, ball went out for a corner to them, and Mark Kendall, who liked a Mars bar or two, picked the ball up and gave it to their winger straight away, and Steve Perryman, right in front of us, shouted at kendall....."don't give them the ball you fat fuck".

Happy days!!!!

I met Pat when i was lucky enough to get a ticket in the corporate lounge thing.
I queued up to get an autograph and when he signed it i put my hand out to shake his but he ignored me. I tried not to show my disappointment but, just as i walked away, he uttered something in that broad nine iron accent, pulled me back and enthusiastically shook my hand.
As already echoed, he had hands like you'd never believe. I'm not a shorty at around 5ft 10"so only a smidgen under his 6ft but his hands wrapped around mine like an adult holding a child.
They were also big, like cartoon hands hams!
