hi guys..i just wanna check with you guys if what my friend sad was right..i was talking to my friend(a long time liverpool fan) and we were talking about europe. of course i was telling him that its very hard for us to make it to the uefa next season because of our league standing..he then told me that spurs are sort of 'confirmed' to be in europe next season, due to our opponent being manchester united. what he is trying to say is that, if manu qualifies for europe through league position(which most probably will happen), the honour will be automatically be given to the second place team.i was wondering if this is real, because if it is, i will be ecstatic because at least we can still attract players to play for european football..

unfortunately not. It goes to the league, not the runner up in the carling cup.

In the Carling Cup ONLY the winner can qualify for Europe, if the winner is ManU the place goes to 6th in the league. It has always been like this, remember Wigan not being in Europe after losing to ManU a couple of years ago?

we have to win the Carling Cup to get into Europe.

If we don't do that, our chance of getting European footall could be:

  • Realistically finish in 7th postion as we can't finish in top 6 (ie hoping Chelsea/Manure/Arse/Villa/Liverpool/Everton win the FA Cup)

  • We win the Uefa Cup

  • We win the fair play league and hope England wins the fair play competition (ie exactly how Man City got European football this year)

Or finish about 8th/9th and take the intertoto route. Doesn't seem to have done Villa any harm.

This past year was the last year for the Intertoto. Also the runners up of any cup cannot make Europa any longer.

Open to correction on this, but isn't the Intertoto extinct now?

I thought Uefa were getting rid of it  This being added to the relaunch of the Uefa Cup by calling it 'The Europa League'

You a closet Magpie?

I just can't believe that such a high-profile, high-quality tournament has been allowed to die and I wasn't informed.

Newcastle trying to claim they'd 'won' the Intertoto was one of the funniest in the long list of embarrassments for the World's Biggest Football Club with the Best Fans In The World.

No way, really? No back door entry into Europe then. So if we don't beat Manure it would appear we don't have a hope in hells chance of making Europe next season if thats the case. I wonder what players will hang around.

I remember a while back Spurs struggling to acquire top quality players as we weren't in Europe.

The only way in for us this year is either as:

1. winners of the Carling Cup, or
2. as 5th place (hah) in the league, or
3. by winning this years UEFA cup.

Realistically we are can forget it if we don't beat Man U. But all is not lost if we are still in Europe by then.

There is a 4th option....

An old gag, but I think it always deserves a laugh.

Or 6th if ManU win the FA cup
or 7th if a top 6 team wins the FA cup and the runners-up no longer qualify
or 8th if England gets a fair-play place and the teams with a higher rank are in europe already.

What if another English team (ie Villa or Man City) won the UEFA and already qualified through the league?
