Having signalled his intent to break into the top four with the high-profile capture of Luka Modric, Juande Ramos has admitted that no less a figure than Samuel Eto’o is next on his wish-list at Tottenham Hotspur.
Croatia international Modric has agreed to join Spurs for £16.5 million from Dinamo Zagreb in a transfer that is a real statement of intent on the part of the North London club.
When replacing Martin Jol in October, Ramos unveiled his plan to make Spurs a force at the highest level of English football and the Spaniard appears to be planning a summer of upheaval at White Hart Lane as he seeks to achieve his aim.
Doubts still surround the future of Dimitar Berbatov but Ramos has made clear his burning ambition by hinting that Barcelona and Cameroon superstar Eto’o is a potential target for the North Londoners.
“You cannot do anything overnight, since it is a project that we undertake for the next five seasons,” said Ramos to Croatian daily Sportske Novosti.
“For great achievements we need big players like Eto’o and Modric, just to move.”
Modric has agreed a six-year deal with Spurs and will join his new team-mates after a work permit is awarded.
Ramos has now revealed how the Croatian former Lleida player Elvis Scoria recommended Modric to him after spotting his big potential with Dinamo.
“I decided on him after seeing him play just twice,” Ramos added.
“Scoria recommended him a year-and-a-half ago, when I still did not know the guy.
“But he was aware of the great ability to find players and Scoria convinced me with his conviction that this was a special player.”

I like how Ramos appears to have a big mouth.

I have images of Ramos chuckling in Donna Cullen's face as she rants at him after his latest interview

Mentioning him in a sentence with Modric like that, does make it seem as if it's something that is done. But I wouldn't want to read too much into it.

There really is a whole load of murky behind-the-scenes stuff going on at the moment at Spurs. These quotes from Ramos below suggest that Juande had identified Modric as a great player a year-and-a-half ago. In other words, before joining Spurs. It's possible to overinterpret these comments, but one clear implication is that Ramos relied on his own scouts at least as much as our scouting system. And once again Ramos is stating that he has personally watched Modric play.

And if we have problems when we are top of the table next year.... and opposition starts singnig "Where were you when you were S*it?".....

We can sing "We were here when we were shit".

We deserve to be in top 4. Everyone knows it.... liverpool have struggled to get top 4 in the last 5 years or so. New team...US

I think that Commolli has been taken out of the loop somewhat as the ITKs were saying in Jan.

He was given a chance at bringing in some great first team players and his only real success so far has been Berbatov, with a couple of naff ones in Zokora and Kaboul.

Glad to see Ramos getting to choose the big name players that he wants, leaving Commolli to pick up some 'for the future' style players.

The Eto'o comment makes it look like at the very least we have met with him/his agent and discussed a move, i feel sorry for Bent if this comes off and we also keep Berbatov, but Eto'o is a much better player than Bent so would still be good for us.

Berbatov, Bale, Zokora, Malbranque, Hutton, Woodgate, Gunter

All brought in with the help of Comolli, and all done well for us.

When have Tottenham ever carried through a 5 year plan .

Talking about one and getting recommendations from "Elvis" has me a mite concerned .

Berbatov - Yes
Bale - too early to tell, he looks amazing, but played very few games for us so far
Zokora - Not sure i can agree with you on that, especially given how much we paid for him, if he had cost £3m i'd maybe agree.
Malbranque - was a last minute rush buy, although not a bad one.

Hutton, Woodgate and Gunter all joined after Ramos, so not sure on where the credit lies for those ones.

I think my biggest problem with Commolli is how much he pays for players, all his signings have positive attributes and potential to be great players, but the money spent is a lot, £8m for Zokora, £8m for Kaboul, £16.5m for Bent, even the £10m for Bale seems a lot.

so just because they signed post ramos means he shouldn't get credit?

can't we just blame all the bad ones on Jol then in that case?

Bent replaced both defoe & Mido & in my opinion, is a better player than both, and if we had been unfortunate enough to actually have either Keane or Berbatov injured for a good period, I think we'd have seen him get into his groove again. You say Bale is too early to tell as a good signing, but then write Bent off as a bad one?

Seems a little biased to me.

& also as has been widely mentioned, it's Levy who does the negotiations, not Comolli, so fees are his department.

i agree with brazilian (waxed) spur, we do seem to just spend and spend and spend, eventually it has got to stop surely? £32mil on zokora bent and kaboul, if, and i stress if, any of these were to be sold, would we get anywhere near the price we paid?? i doubt it! even if we call bent £10mil, would we even get that?

then we spunk £16mil on Luka, potentially we are looking at Villa and/or Etoo who will cost another £15mil (roughly) that takes it to a crazy amount
