Huddlestone for Boateng was a straight swap, presumably in the hope we might pass the ball better.

Keano for Lennon was tactical. When Jol made this substitution, Keane would play wide midfield, but Ramos usually keeps all three of our strikers central (with one or two playing a little deeper). However, this left us short one wide player, so I suspect the plan was for Zokora to push forwards (remember that animated touchline conversation between Juande & Didier?).

Then Kaboul broke down. So it was either O'Hara or Taarabt, with O'Hara being the safer option. Zokora moved centrally, with JJ covering the entire right flank. Not ideal, but JJ is very fit and reasonably fast.

It wasn't ideal, but leaving Defoe on and playing Berba and Keano just behind was probably the right move.

He got the tactics spot on today and was simply let down by defensive incompetence. Once we get some defenders who can defend he'll get the results that his tactical bravery deserves.

Huddlestone bought us time on the ball and was a good change. They could not get near him. Once we got 50% of possession Villa looked vulnerable. Ramos had played Jenas and prince for their athletic ability strength but they were clearly second best today. The substitutions tactical changes illustrated that we have recruited well in the coaching department. We bossed the second period and almost gained something from a game that looked beyond us in the first half. Kudos to Ramos and Poyet

Ramos what a genius and a world class coach.

He makes 2 changes and the game turns to our favour with 67% possesion. We come back to level the score for only another stupid error at the back (the first was a joke aswell) But I am looking forward for when Ramos brings his own players in.

it was also like :

Jenas - Zokora - dawson - Lee

Huddlestone - Malbranque - O'Hara
Keane - Berbatov
Defoe

La Lige style of systems

it is worked to dominate the 2nd half, but the set peices defending was the difference.

Ramos is World Class.

I've noticed that Jenas tends to dissapears in some games, and Boateng is a mixed bag, full of commitment but still very raw. Spurs lost the battle in midfield in the first half.

It seems to me that the fixture congestion is catching up especially with Malbranque and Berbatov. They need a rest. And Defoe is big step down in class from Keane.

Jenas played ok/good in recent games apart from yesterday. His form is far better than last season as he played good games against West Ham, Wigan, Portsmouth, Man City etc ..

earlier this season, he made Gerrard poor at Anfield, so what do you want from him ?

Jenas performances are reasonable considering our system used to be with only 2 CM against teams using 4-5-1 ( 3 in the middle ) .. we are just losing because set-pieces or bad mistakes by Defenders .. so, Is Jenas job to be care man for them ?

At last! A question with an easy answer!

When a manager makes a substitution and it works, he's a genius. When it doesn't work, he's an idiot.

Basically, yes. In the same way that a team that wins games is good and a team that loses them is bad. Ramos has really turned games with his substitutions on a number of occasions for us.

I know you have sympathy for Jol but don't let it cloud your judgement of Ramos.

I am not sure how anybody could begin to argue with that.

one possible problem with Ramos subs is that he often goes gung ho - taking off defenders for smaller forwards - this is liable to leave us weaker at set pieces

Howdy DC_Boy. For me that's more a criticism of the fact Ramos frequently does not have a utility defender on the bench. So when Kaboul was injured yesterday, it was a choice of O'Hara or Taarabt with Zokora moving centrally.

On other occasions when he's taken a CB off, it's either been because the player's having a mare (Kaboul v Spammers), or he wanted to change the system to a 3-4-1-2 (not fully fit King v Reading).

I do think the time to judge Ramos' substitutions better will be when he has his squad of players, playing his style of football. At the moment Juande's often been firefighting with his changes, and doing it largely successfully.

I also think the reason that Ramos has not been choosing a utility defender on the bench is precisely to give himself game-changing options if things aren't going well (eg the presence of Taarabt on the bench recently).
