I couldn't agree more Viola. I'd go even further, fouling is now so acceptable that it is nullifying skill. FIFA should get to grips with this as a major priority (a long with refereeing). FIFA are desperate for skillfull players to sell their product round the globe, yet don't have the bollocks to create an environment in which they are encouraged.

Foul play of any kind should start being taken more seriously and it should be applied rigorously. Sin bins should be introduced so teams cannot profit from habitual fouling. And referees should learn to spot not just the obvious blatant fouls but the type of constant foot left in or body check after the ball's gone tactics that the likes of Bolton, Blackburn, Stoke etc continually do all game long.

FIFA should also seriously think about all grounded tackles. They are invariably the ones that cause all the injuries.

This would also encourage more skillfull defending.

Absolutely. Unless the referees and FIFA clamp down on this growing trend, we will see this kind of approach more and more. Football has changed so much since the "honest days" before CL and mega TV deals.
It has become more cynical and desperate, business as much - if not more - than pure footballing contest.

And to still use the argument that "no manager would tell their players to intentionally harm opposition" is seeing just half the truth. The other half may be that while they do not tell their players to deliberately inflict a heavy injury, they make it very clear to a simple footballer's mind that the manager wants him to "rough them up a bit" - which often leads to badly controlled tackles and serious injuries.

Looking back at the video of the tackle, it seems to me that Ramsey is the one making the tackle and not Shawcross. Shawcross is the player in possession of the ball and it's Ramsey who chalenges him. A bad challenge by Ramsey that ended up with him breaking his own leg. Rescind the red card.

Yes and no. Ramsey is the one making the challenge but it's actually quite a good one - i.e. he nicks the ball away from Shawcross so when Shawcross goes to kick the ball he kicks Ramsey's leg instead.

I definitely agree that it wasn't a red card. Stoke should appeal. Shawcross would have had to have been substituted anyway.

I can't believe so many Woolwich fans are seeing this as vindictive against them as a side - one here claiming that, because they pass the ball so quickly, other teams are told to go in hard against them - even if that is true, i've seen tougher collisions where both parties come off fine. There has to be a question mark over the medical or training facilities at their shed, or maybe the kit these kids are wearing.

Oh, she's going on about how it's ruined his World Cup dream - i said he shouldn't even be there, let alone expect to be going to the Cup, asked what he's done to deserve that call up and not be considered another Walnut, to which there was no answer.

I do wonder if there's a clause in each England managers contract that states he will have to select at least one Woolwich academy player in his friendlies, it's a bit weird how they get into the side over players who are on top of their game. Pick your squad on form? Yeah, pull the other one.

World Cup? Ramsey's Welsh isn't he...?

He is indeed.

Maybe he was in the running to play for Nigeria or something.

Not sure how relevant this is since I'm going back a bit but thought I'd throw it into the mix anyway.

1963: Terry Medwin - career ended by broken leg

1963-64 Dave Mackay - broken leg (twice)

1965 Maurice Norman - career ended by broken leg

1969 Joe Kinnear - broken leg

There may have been more but I'm doing this from memory.

According to Mr Wenger this would be more than coincidence. But I don't remember Billy Nick making a fuss about Spurs being targeted.

And, believe me, players get much more protection these days.

More recently, didn't we have the Wimbledon assaults on the two Garys, Mabbutt and Stevens?

I don't believe you can snap your whole leg in half and not feel it! My sis broke her elbow and wrist at the same time when she was young and she said it was agony. I'm sure he probably went into shock as well if he looked down and saw it. Eek

My mate had a horse fall back on him and snap his leg (thigh) to the extent it was at right angles to its usual position and he was talking saying it didn't hurt. It only really hurt after 5 min or so when the ambulance tried to move him and straighten it to get him on the stretcher.
