If this slump in form had come in december.....would we have signed better players?

And a question to those who thought the january-window was a good one...do you still believe so? Or do you now agree that we really screwed up in that window?

I mean we threw Gio on in full panic last night....

Never mind rewind to Jan, i would rewind to the emirates game and pick a team that wasn't exposed to the scums 5 midfield, we have not recovered from that mauling and they have grown since it.

The problem we have is that Levy and/or Harry can't seem to understand that so much of a teams success can be built on a single player - a top striker.

There's a reason that strikers cost so much and it's the same reason that Arsenal have managed to leap frog us in such a short period of time.

I'm not saying that the rest of the team are irrelevant, but a striker who can score 30 goals in a season is the difference between being title challengers and not.

We NEED to spend big on a striker this summer, in fact we've needed to do it for a while now.

If we don't i can't see us challenging for anything above 4th next season.

I just wonder what would've happened if Defoe had reached Bales cross at the Etihad and we went on to win that game 3-2......god damn it I hate football sometimes:bang:

Nothing would have happened. We hammered Newcastle 5-0 after that, and havent won a game since.

A few of our boys have been found out. We have put them on too high a pedestal. Modric, Bale, VDV, Adebayor, Parker. All top players when we are winning and thigs are going well. Where are they now? Hiding up their own arseholes.

We haven't got wide player cover to rest Lennon or Bale so they can have a think about their game .

Modric looked more motivated last night than I've seen him since Christmas . He's been cruising at times .

Parker is clearly tired . I don't know why Harry didn't bring Livermore on .

Don't think you can say VDV has been found out . The guy has been a bright light for us and played with his heart .

Saha showed his quality again last night , OK it didn't reach fruition but he is a proper player .

Have to hand it to Cameron Jerome last night . Liked him since he was at Cardiff . Only one chance and he finished it .

I wanted Hoilett, that Blackburn board would have accepted a decent offer as well imo.

We had a mixed window, but very few teams did big business. Our slump now isn't just down to a poor transfer window, it's a combination of things: injuries to key players, the England managers job, poor tactics, tired players, stupid individual mistakes, etc.

I wish we'd singed cover for Lennon as that would have been a big plus but we tried and failed to get Hazard instead -it would have been the signing of the year but it meant we couldn't commit to other players.

The January window is not a good time to do business, better to get the players in the summer. A decent striker will always be overpriced in January. Just look at Carol.

Saha for Pav was pretty good business for a January window.

The thing is no teams did big business..in summer you just know that Chelsea and Arsenal will spend BIGTIME..probably Liverpool too and thats just in England...we will be fairly far down the pecking order when it comes to the Hazards and Krasics in the world...sorry to say.

BUT I have faith....COYS!!!

I was livid with our January signings, but after a cooling off period, I convinced myself that they made sense as a short term stop gap.

On reflection, my first reaction was the correct one.

I mean, come on, not one decent striker purchase since we bought Berbatov back in mid 2007!!!!!!! That, is scandalous for a club of our stature, with our aspirations.

No it wasn't. It was a 'treading water' type signing, not a progressive one, and if you're not going to try and improve or progress your squad, then why bother?

So taking in 9m(?) and getting a better player (slightly) and probably trimming the wage bill in doing so isn't a good bit of business?

Availability in January is never great. Pav was never playing so selling him and bringing in a slightly better, short-term replacement was good business money-wise but won't help us to push on much this season.

Maybe we should/could have bought Hoillett but once again can't see his signing as being that significant for this season.

The strikers who did move in January such as Zamora, Cisse and the Newscastle guy also weren't of a high enough quality to push us on.

Not sure it's the January window specifically that is accountable for our loss of form. Our lack of like-for-like backup for Lennon and Bale and a quality striker are ongoing problems.

To get the team togetherness, determination and all the players on the same wavelength are still issues and aren't simply solved through the transfer market.

We're moving in a positive direction but this summer I hope we have a couple of quality signings lined up.

 You make it sound so easy. How many 30 goal a season strikers are there in the PL? It's taken van Persie how long at Arsenal to get to this form? We do not have the resources to buy the kind of player you're talking about.

If a bit of cash back is your primary motive, then yes, but if you're of the mindset that there was no better moment in time to drive the advantage we had at the time over an ailing Arsenal and Chelsea side, then no, a complete waste of time and effort in my opinion.

I'll ask the question again that I posed in the last 3/4 transfer windows:

How serious are we in becoming a perennial CL team?

The evidence of the last few transfer windows would suggest 'not very' IMO.
