Thoughts?

Rumours that he might be coming as a player, but I wonder if this is nearer the truth.

- Close to AVB
- Knows the English game
- Known for being intelligent
- Now 34 and only played 8 games for RM last season
- No other obvious candidate (Pereira and Di Matteo otherwise disposed)

stranger things have happened

I would like Van der Vaart to be more involved in coaching also

Yeah - I'd definitely like to see Rafa groomed for the top job one day.

Carvalho as #2, Rafa as player-coach would be superb.

Imagine if Redknapp was rumoured to be bringing in a 34 year old centre back as a player, there'd be a different reaction to this

Probably because he would be playing, remember when Redknapp said if he was at another club he would of signed Sol, after he left Notts County?

Really never would of have known having seen some of his tackles, I wouldn't mind him but surprised Tim Sherwood hasn't been considered for this instead of technical director

O/T whats interesting is that Di Matteo was hated more by the players under AVB and it should be good to see how than pans out over a season with them no longer rallying together

Carvalho is more of an intriguing prospect than Ryan Nelson though! He was world class, and a talisman in the Premiership for the Chavs - he's probably got another season or two in him.

Kaboul Vertonghen

or

Carvalho Caulker

Would be a great tutor and experience for Caulker to play alongside too. We're bound to get injuries (we always do)... Dawson would still get game time.

I don't think AVB will (unless perhaps Gallas goes as well as King).

I was thinking a purely a full-time assistant manager.

Is this a proper rumour with legs or just link any one vaguely related avb or portugal and call it journalism.

When you have a new foreign manager they normally appoint an ex-player with strong ties to the club and knows the league back to front. I thought Clive Allen fitted this role perfectly and hence the delay in announcing his departure.

If it was Sherwood surely it would have been announced by now?

Dunno who it will be.

Just me hypothosising, as no serious candidates have really been mentioned.

I think AVB should appoint Gary Neville as his assistant. They could play FIFA together....

....Ledley?

I love Ledley as a player. But have you ever heard him speak? Very retiring/shy and not the brightest bulb in the box. He might just be able to pull off being a specialist defensive coach, but certainly not an AM.

AVB's still only 34, you wonder whether an old head as no2 would be a better idea? not sure of any potential candidates

Just because he speaks like that doesn't mean he isn't intelligent and how is in person, some people are not made for a tosser to shove a microphone in their face and interrogate whilst sweating like a bitch after a match
