I really only pointed out that in one of the biggest frames of his life, World Cup semi, he helped his side to clean sheet, and that Dawson has accomplished nothing like that at that level.

Actually the World Cup does have some relevance, because what I'm looking for alongside Vertonghen is a leader and organiser, and the Dutch defence was made up of mostly inexperienced players at that level, De Vrij, Janmat, Blind, Martins-Indi, and he was the senior player organising the back line.

I don't think he is the Baresi or King-incarnate, just that his personality and skill set could help to make the rest of our back four better, and as a unit tougher to break down.

The basic point you're making is a valid one. I do agree with you that we need an experienced heads in central defence, people such as Vlaar, O'Shea or someone of that ilk but the very idea that we should tempt Villa with an offer of Holtby + cash to make a deal is one that makes me very angry and bewildered as to what might be going on inside the minds of the movers and shakers at WHL.

I would hate to lose Lewis. I would rather we sell Rose or Naughton.

Regarding the sentence I've highlighted, I don't think you can compare one player's ability to another's purely on the strength of one of their international managers picking them. I also feel Michael get's a very bad press among some Spurs fans, which always dissapoints me, but we all know his heart and soul are with Tottenham Hotspur and to have players with his dedication and influence around the place is a major boost. And contrary to popular belief, he's not a poor defender either. He may not be the quickest around, but he's along way from being a bad central defender.
