Yep. And if we were faffing about and not really progressing much with Everton, who's to say a conversation with Conte and actually movement wouldn't convince Barkley. He might be sick of hanging around waiting for something to happen.
Imagine if you'd been told a company have head-hunted you and are trying to put together a package to bring you to their company. Whilst that's been dragging on for weeks another established company head hunts you, except they they have the terms and contract on the table ready for you to sign and seal it. There's no doubt with Chelsea's offer, whereas Barkley probably doubts whether or not we will pull it off.
This is what I've been quietly concerned about with our "waiting game" strategy. It only takes one club to get off to a bad start to the season for them to suddenly realise they need more players and when they have the cash like Chelsea, City, etc, they can get much more done in a shorter timeframe.

Of course they'll make a last minute move for him. It's probably already in their strategy. It'll give them a home grown, young, versatile squad player and will mug us off again in the process. It's hardly a secret we are after him.
