I'm sure we'd be happy to pay a reasonable loan fee (I don't know what that would be, maybe £5m?) , we just don't want to saddle ourselves with 4-5 year contract for a 29 year old.

From Atalanta's point of view, it may be a case of either taking the loan fee now or lose him for nothing at the end of the season.
do we have to offer him a long term deal? 2 year deal, a 3rd with option perhaps is likely to attract interest from the player entourage. just because Spurs usually do long term deals with (theoretical) high leverage guys, it's fair game not to offer it in a depth solution closing in on his 30s.

Atalanta would maybe do that if they really wanted to get rid of him and had no other solutions in the market but as we have seen in the last week, OM apparently has a deal in place with Atalanta (or close to it) and he has actually started for Atalanta in one of Serie A's premium fixtures, even amidst all the rumors.

so yea, all things considered, Spurs will probably have to take him on a full time deal if they are ought to get him. that said, there are likely better alternatives in the market elsewhere. but it's late in the window, solutions for depth roles with the quality we are ought to get aren't easy to attract so it's not out of the realm of possibiliies this ends up materializing.

No.

Sensible.
Yeah I reckon the thinking here is that it'll allow us to spend big on a CB or alternatively bring 2 attackers in. Then the Malinovskyi loan would cover us until Gil is ready, without bloating the squad next summer.

Well, it's certainly worth remembering that we were told transfers were going to be somewhat 'fluid'.

Save a little, or loan here, maybe spend extra elsewhere. Same goes for the HG, which I believe @Trix has alluded to today.

7 in, 3 out (I think) and people are wondering why we aren’t throwing money around.

Whilst also lambasting Chelsea for doing just that.

And arguing in the Zaha thread that we should be investing in younger players, whilst arguing in the Gordon thread that we should get more established Premier League players in.

SC can be downright contradictory sometimes.

Sign him and play him in midfield and we're on to a winner. Great ball retention and maybe the best ball striking in world football. Get it done.

I would imagine if we get him on loan (probably due to his age) that he is maybe plan C, D or E, until plan A becomes available, whoever that may be.
It's odd how people see "150MM war chest" and want it spent NOW, regardless of who it's on. Like with Llenglet, Malinovskyi is likely a stop gap alternative that can help us in the interim but not tie up funds in the event someone we REALLY want comes available in a subsequent window.

Just because you have the money doesn't mean you have to spend the money.
