There's an item in the ITK forum saying it's a stright swap of Eto'o and Berba who has agreed to terms with Barca. Waiting for Eto'o agreeing to Puma making up the wage difference. This may very well explain why there hasn't been any more news from the Berba camp for almost 2 weeks.

Personally that ITK story sounds like balls to me. Big swaps almost never happen in European football.

"Samuel Eto'o has stated that he wants to remain at Barcelona, but has not ruled out a move to Inter after telling Tottenham that he needs a greater challenge"

I think that breaking into the top four in the most competetive league in the world in quite a challenge myself.

What does this mean? If it means to finish in top 4 once in 6-7 years, it's not a big deal. Everton made it and achieved nothing after that. If it means to finish regularly above Arsenal or Liverpool or Chelsea, then this is nearly impossible. The realistic task is to make the top 4 top 5 which is very difficult, too.

Eto'o snubs White Hart Lane move

Tottenham's hopes of signing Samuel Eto'o have been dashed after the Barcelona ace admitted he is looking for a bigger challenge

Eto'o insists he is happy to see out the remaining two years on his Barcelona contract, but he is expected to leave the Camp Nou this summer as new manager Pep Guardiola makes his mark on his inherited squad.

Tottenham are understood to have an interest in Eto'o as boss Juande Ramos prepares for the possible exit of star asset Dimitar Berbatov.

However, Cameroon striker Eto'o - who was on target for his country in their 2010 World Cup qualifying victory over Mauritius on Sunday - has ruled out the possibility of moving to White Hart Lane.

"Tottenham, and I hope the English fans will forgive me, are a club in mid-table and I need more," Eto'o told CRTV.
"I insist that I have a contract with Barcelona until 2010 and I feel great at the club."

However, Eto'o has hinted that he would be keen to join Jose Mourinho's revolution at Internazionale.

Mourinho is ready to ring the changes at the Giuseppe Meazza this summer and, having attempted to sign Eto'o while in charge at Chelsea, the Portuguese could renew his interest.

"I cannot exclude the option of Inter, but I want to repeat that I still feel I am a Barcelona and that I feel under no pressure," Eto'o concluded.

he's got a point.

who remembers who finished 2nd-4th in the league?

everyone is so fixated with the money the champions league brings that most teams now consider finishing 4th as winning the title

The context doesn't imply beyond doubt that Spurs were in for Eto'o but it seems that Ramos tried to sign him.

Hope his career goes into tailspin now. No need for that. Just a polite ,vague "didn't work out" or "I've had no detailed discussions" would have been the gentlemenly thing to do. Can we relax censoring for a few minutes while I vent pls?

Greater in as far as it is a more difficult challange, but certainly not the challange he wants. He wants the type of challage that involves trying to win both the domestic title and CL I suspect.

Maybe if we had been knocking on the door of the top four last year things would be slightly differnt, unfortunley we people look at the table they will see a midtable team and this will hinder our attemps to sign certain players.

A certain Bulgarian may want the same thing I suspect.

Gareth Barry has told Martin O'neil that he wants to play in the champions league. But Liverpool buying Barry will NOT close the gap on the teams above them, but it will widen the gap between the top 4 and the rest of us.

This is why the Champions League needs to be cut to 3 places. Then 3 teams cannot possible buy up all the talent in their respective leagues.

Its just the same as any other world class player we try to sign. I'm always pleased to see us sign players like this but the fact is, we haven't signed anybody on the scale of this for a very long time. Certainly not since the top 4 cemented themselves into the Champions League. We're doing the right thing by signing players young, and hopefully the likes of Giovani, Modric and Bostock all develop into world class players.

As much as i rate Barry, i cant see it spreading the gap between Liverpool and the teams below. I dont rate Barry anymore than Alonso myself. Besides, if we're to compete with the likes of Liverpool, then we need to pick up a lot more points against the other teams outside the top 4 (especially away from home.)

As long as we have a good enough team to beat those teams on a regular basis, home or away, aswell as compete with the top 4 (hopefully winning our home games,) we should be able to challenge for a top 4 finish.

exactly

Our last season was awful and has hindered our progress and ability to attract top players.

So Villa lose their most influential player/captain and it will not weaken them? Berbatov goes to Liverpool and it will not weaken us?

The less teams in the ECL the better. And now that the G14 is being disbanded, I can see Platini tightening the screw.

Eto'o's wage demands were ridiculous - even if Puma had agreed to share the load. And he does have a giant ego - most recently displayed when he headbutted and broke the nose of a Cameroonian journalist.

For Eto'o, coming to Spurs from Barca & the CL would, sadly for us, have been a footballing step down. However, for David Villa, who's spent all season fighting relegation with Valencia, joining Spurs would not be a step down. And Villa's wage demands won't be anywhere near so ridiculous. If the CL clubs sign the other big name strikers being touted around (Drogba, Eto'o, Huntelaar, Adebayor), I still wouldn't be surprized to see Villa at Spurs.
