Arsenal & Tottenham Hotspur Readying Bids For Sebastien Bassong – Report

The London clubs are preparing to test Newcastle United's resolve to hold onto arguably their best player of last season...

Sebastien Bassong - Newcastle United (PA)

With Newcastle United's owner, Mike Ashley, desperate to sell both club and players to reduce his own losses, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are both preparing bids for the Magpies’ young defensive starlet, Sebastien Bassong, according to north east paper The Journal.

Newcastle are currently in turmoil after relegation and Ashley has reportedly put all his players up for sale. After being voted as United's 2008-09 Player of the Season by readers of The Journal, few Toon players are more sought after than the 22-year-old.

The north east side have put a price tag of £12m on Bassong, who impressed with his calmness and authority in defence alongside Steven Taylor.

While this is a massive mark-up on the £500,000 that the Magpies paid Metz for Bassong a year ago, should either London club come in with an eight figure bid, it is likely to be accepted.

If the takeover talks are true, Arsenal and Spurs may make their move for Bassong sooner rather than later because new owners could provide a cash injection to Newcastle, making the sale of some players unlikely.

^ Isn't that Beye?

I prefer Beye to Basson, if I'm being honest.

Its Cacapa isnt it?

It is definitely Cacapa. That's who I meant. I must have wrote Beye as he was on my mind for the second part of my post, which still stands. I prefer Beye to Bassong.

'Readying Bids' classic transfer jargon. Bassong looks like a diamond in the rough, potentially a very good defender but still making school boy errors maybe due to playing for Newcastle though

wouldnt be a bad signing but for a 8 figure sum surely theres better options out there and cheaper as well. i wouldnt put him ahead of woodgate or king and if dawson keeps his form from last season i wouldnt put him ahead of him either so 10m+ for a 4th choice(only imo obviously) is too high

To be fair - spurs are hardly a finishing school for the art of defending are we!!!!

I would suggest thatyoung and still prone to errors is the last thing we need - world class is. I would stick with Dawson, the arse can have him

distin is a good player.

He is, but by no means bombproof.

As for Bassong, a lot of rough edges, and some of his positioning has been very poor, but there's something there. For £5m, maybe, if we didn't have Dawson and Dervite (not to mention Charlie). Assuming Ledley's able to play in the majority of league games next season, CB is hardly a priority.

Could we one of the clubs Bassong is talking to..? He seems like a Harry kind of signing.

Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong has revealed that he is in talks with two clubs regarding a summer move.

The Frenchman, who has committed his international future to Cameroon, was powerless to prevent the Magpies slipping out of the Premier League last season and was expected to be among those seeking an exit from St James' Park during the transfer window.

The commanding centre-half has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, while Manchester City, Aston Villa and Tottenham are also believed to be keen.

It now appears to be only a matter of time before the 22-year-old, who only joined Newcastle from Metz last July, will be on his way out of Tyneside.

Bassong has refused to reveal the identity of those clubs that have made an initial approach for his services, but he has admitted that discussions have been opened.

"I have started to negotiate with two English clubs," he told Aujourd'hui Sport.

I have a problem with this, during the African Nations Cup should Bassong sign and become a first choice centre back we would lose both him and BAE our current first choice left back for a month. That's potentially half the defence for a month!
