Should we have paid 15m for Cahill?

The lastest news says it wasn't about cash - but Last of the mohicans author Daniel 'Jermain' Defoe.

I can't see that we could have done that. Pavlyuchenko and Adebayor? People would have lynched Redknapp (again).

Damn right we should of paid 15million! As soon as he had signed on a longer contract his price would of instantly gone up to about £20mil so it was a no brainer deal! I was shocked when we couldnt do the deal, it makes no sense to me especially with all the cash we have raked in. I really fear for us at the back if Gallas or King dont hurry back from injury.

Since I've only seen him on MOTD and against us (I've got far more entertaining things to do than watch Bolton otherwise) I can't say I've seen enough properly to judge, but on that limited basis I'd say he's not a great deal better than Dawson or Kaboul. £15m? Stroll on.

It was also said last night that it wasn't the fee that was the problem but Cahill wanting a payday bonanza with City.

Whether we bought Cahill or not shouldn't be the issue. The issue is the same as it has for the last 2 seasons. We should be looking to find a top central defender to take over from a crippled King and an ageing Gallas. we should have identified some defenders the moment it was realised Bassong wasn't quite up to scratch as they hoped and that kaboul is better, but obviously only 2nd fiddle to King and Gallas. We need someone who will partner Dawson as part of the first names down on the sheet.

It is not as simple as saying should we have paid the 15M... suggestions today are that Defoe was asked for and also did Cahill really want to come?!

But if we accept it was just about the cash then I am not sure he is worth 15M considering his contract and overall ability.

Yes we possibly lose the player to a different club come Jan or next season, but for 15M I would expect to be able to sign someone better.

Like who??

This is exactly my point! We always say that for that type of money we'll find someone better, but who is better?

Cahill is arguably better than what we have, bar King, Gallas and perhaps Dawson!

In terms of someone better than Cahill, then shouldn't we have found that out at the beginning of the window!!?

I would have really liked him but 15million was way too much considering the length of time left on his contract.

Not sure if this has been said by anyone else, but I think yesterday was our one and only chance to sign him. Come January he will have been approached by Chelsea, or even Liverpool, and they will blow us out of the water on wages so our only hope is if we can get an offer accepted by Bolton at the start of the January window before any deal is struck between the player and other clubs.

Therefore yes, we should have paid £15m for him. Now if we want a centre-back in the next 2 windows I think we'll have to go for someone else, like, oooh, I dunno (not Samba please). And I doubt Levy or Harry do either to be honest.

Is Cahill worth 15m? I dont know. But if he is, why didnt we pay it?

So what if he has one year left on his deal? By January a bigger team will come and sign him (possible on a pre contract for free the next summer).

If we wanted him, we should have bought him.

Now we have to go another year with Kaboul and Dawson.

I think the bigger question is, we knew what they wanted so if we weren't prepared to pay it why even go in for him - Also If we knew we wanted a CB but we didn't think he was worth what they were willing to accept, where was our second choice?

"apparently" we tried for some big strikers, who "apparently" wouldn't come to us - BUT we did have a back up in Ada, and using a one up top formation. Dawson and Kabaul Will cost us games

They fecked up (again):bang:

Exactly
Why do people keep defending levy, he fecked up again this window, just like the last two - Yes we did get some quality players, BUT we could and should have done better:-|

i dont know, a £15 million bid for a defender will probably be accepted by alot of European clubs, british players/premier league players are vastly over priced

a bit of good scouting and taking the chance on someone who hasnt already played in the league could work out well. but i dont think our current scouting team is functioning at all

Yes. We're going to be relying on Dawson, Kaboul and Bassong an aweful lot now and I can't see a decent partnership with any combination of those three.

this and that isnt anywhere near a quality depth of CB's for a top 4 side... forget King our only true top class defender, so yes we desperately should have spend £15M on Cahill

iF we're not going to take a chance on someone from outside the premiership i fear this is the going rate for such a defender.
I wouldn't have been over the moon if we'd got him but we certainly could do with him in our squad.

If the Mirror story is true, we should have given them Defoe + £4/5m, then bought Ruiz with the Crouch money. 3 problems solved in 15 minutes work, I reckon...

we shouldn't have spent 15m on him, but we must have known the rough asking price before we decided to go in for him on deadline day and therefore should have been expected to pay close to that as Bolton deemed acceptable

glad in many respects we didn't sign him as I don't rate him to be any better than Dawson or, especially, Kaboul. But we surely identified the need for another CB so it baffles me why we left it a)to the last minute, again and b)expected to get him on the cheap

You mean apart from the one that got us something like 9 clean sheets in a row the season we finished 4th?

I doubt that Defoe would have wanted to go to Bolton to be honest.

No. He's decent but not worth that sort of dosh.

He'll have his pick soon enough and it won't be us.
