Should we really buy anymore English players?

We could always buy back players who trained at the club at as youngster. If Barca get Fabregas to fulfill their quota (not that they need to) surely we could bring back Alton Thelwell?

Or Beckham?

Before it would have been believed that having an English/British spine to a team was crucial, but it has been proven that this is no longer the case. The language barrier isnt really a sound arguement any longer so it's a matter of building the best squad you can with the resources available. Some of the best foreign players in the premiership wouldnt have been too highly regarded on the continent.

The english players as a group at the club have let us down and as soon as a world cup comes along, they are never injured and seem to playing out of their skin,,

Did you watch the world cup? You do realise that England were shit?

Don't forget for Europe there is a need for four club trained players.

"A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21"

So that's pretty much anyone who has come through the youth team or signed as an 18 year old.

The price for established English players has always been high but the money being sought for 'potential' is now frightening.
Rather than rely on a sell-on clause, clubs seem able to demand huge amounts up front.
Smalling, Jones, Henderson, Carroll - all relatively inexperienced but costing a fortune. Even the Kyles for us were expensive.

Goes without saying United & Liverpool must be very confident of these 4, they'll be hoping they've got a 'Gareth Bale' situation, not a 'Francis Jeffers'.

Which is why we're keeping Danny Rose and we desperately need to keep hold of Bale

rumour in the paper this morning that UEFA are drafting up a new rule that for each match day squad of 18, half would need to be British. That really would change things, how would Arsenal or Chelsea manage that?

Don't think that would come into play but if Arsenal have more talent like Gibbs and Wilshere coming through then they might not be in much of a state. They already had guys like Afobe, Lansbury, J E-T on loan at lower division clubs and I remember seeing reports that they were doing quite well.

This article reckons that the ruling is about 12 months away and has already been squared with the EU who stood against the 6+5 ruling.

I think that highly unlikely, if you have a EC passport etc, lawyers would rip it to shreds.

Barca, Milan and Bayern would have far more trouble .

I am interested in knowing how many of our Europa League squad would meet the "Home-trained" requirement though. Rose (presuming he stays), King and Bale, but who else? Huddlestone was 18 and a half when he joined and Lennon 18 - I'm guessing they might qualify.

We have GOT to keep faith with more of the kids, and keep scouring the world for younger players. The new Training Centre is more important than ever.

Rose doesn't need to be registered next season, he's still considered U21.
Crouch, Lennon, Bale, O'Hara, Livermore, King, Button
all have club trained status for us.

I believer Livermore is out of contract (?), O'Hara want out and we want rid,
while it doesn't seem Harry have any faith in Button.
So the 4 club trained left are important to keep: Crouch, Bale, Lennon, King.

Cheers.

Surprised that Crouch was with us for long enough first time round, but that's cool. If we sell him, can we name Rose (or, say, Townsend) as the fourth?

Any U21 player is eligible to play without being registered,
so there would be no need to register either Rose or Townsend next season.

Clubs aren't forced to have 4 home grown / club trained.
Only "penalty" is that we'll only be allowed 24 registered seniors if we lack one home grown /club trained.

Crouch was with us from 14 to 19.
Rule is three years between 15 and 21.
Players that have been with a club since age 7 to 15 and then left would not be considered club trained. So we couldn't buy Gary Hooper or Michael Knightly to fill the quota.

English players are, usually, not as talented (and less worth the ennomous outlays that are now needed?). On the other hand...the 'slightly, above average, 'Jihnny Foreigner' will play more and ask for less, in the First season...anyway). One has only to look at the poor quality of the National team to see that, once again, there is no real quality without Fifa/Uefa assistance?).
On the THFC front, I do not, totally, disregard British players...Bale is close to World Class, as is King....but I can not think of any others who will 'set the world alight'...and wearing the THFC Cockrel! Sad but true (as I type). I am too tired to bother trying to solve any current THFC Challenges (as IF I could haha). Tomorrow, might be another day....so let's sleep on IT and ask Levy to earn his 'dosh'-'lolly' (A 60's term...to, perhaps awaken the sleeping, dazed, farmward bird? We are WAITING...More Beans Mum haha...COYS!

To be fair, I know this was a while ago but we got Bale (£7m), Huddlestone (£3m), Lennon (£1.5m), Rose (£1.5m), Dawson (£4m-ish), Walker (not sure of the price but no more than £4m)...We're doing alright with young English players but its a case of a lot of clubs going for a few players so that's bound to drive the market price up.

We may have to look further afield for value but we shouldn't ignore domestic talent for fear of their prices alone.

Bale isn't English.
