This is just guff. We have players that can play the system, we can't play 4-4-2 with one fit striker. And to say Sigurdsson is the most noticeable under performer is ridiculous.
So what is going on.......enlighten me...I have said what I think.....I won't call what you say guff I promise

I think Sunday players were tired, and in general our style of play is massively missing Adebayor. Defoe has been scoring goals, but is incredibly limited and limiting. To say that Sigurdsson has been our most noticeable underperformer is just laughable. Dempsey and Walker are two who spring to mind from Sunday who were both much worse.

Not sure AVB would agree with you....Sig is doing a VDV impersonation almost every game....he must like the early shower.
More seriously, on Sunday we were set up wrong.....Sig is not a central midfielder full stop. Sandro is struggling to control the ball let alone pass it effectively....of course he works hard but if we able to retain it he wouldn't need to flying in with tackles....him and Demble together lack something....a passer as the third central player ...that would give us a better balance. The lack of a passer means that Defoe doesn't get it in the channels and Lennon and Bale receive the ball under pressure. Jenas or Huddlestone would do a better job in that 3

You must have been watching a different game then. First half Dempsey was no where, he looked unfit and disinterested and his touch, movement and passing were all way off. Walker too was nowhere near his usual self.

did Sig actually touch the ball? ....... totally anonymous hence being hooked instead of Dempsey
I agree Dempsey and Walker were hardly stellar performers (which could said of many others tbh) but not standouts in the same way Sig was.

I was looking forward to seeing how he'd get on as he certainly looked good at Swansea, however like a lot of you I've been disappointed. There have been one or two flashes of brilliance (mainly some incisive passing), however he seems nervous and uncomfortable.

I guess it's worth remembering that this is a very different level to playing for Reading or Swansea. Without meaning to sound disrespectful to those clubs I think it was easier for him to play his own game due to the relative quality alongside him. He could make ambitious attempts at passes, or take shots from 30 yards out, because he was one of the main (if not the main) attacking threats.

I'm hesitating to say 'big fish in small pond - to small fish in big pond' syndrome, but he comes across as a little intimidated by the options around him, and reluctant to trust his abilities - which I'm sure he has.

Hopefully he'll get a goal soon and can begin to relax and enjoy himself. I think letting VDV go (and the subsequent collapse of the Moutinho deal) has put a lot of pressure on this young lad. He's never going to be anywhere near VDV's level so I hope those fans adjust their expectations a bit and give him a chance.

Or they could just boo him a lot. That should do the trick. Before you know it he will be playing the sexy football, escorting Jessica Alba to the lane and speaking Dutch. (Please note all said with a large dose of sarcasm).

Disagree, Sig was at least trying to be involved in the game, was keen to chase back and showing himself and wanting the ball. Dempsey hid.

Now days in football 23 YO is not considered a young age, look at players like Hazard, Oscar, Neymar players around their 20's that succeeded early in their career.
I am not saying that to be considered a great footballer you should start to perform well at your early 20's but if you look at the history of football most of the great players have been one since their early 20's.
Take home message - Sigurosson maybe will become a good player in Tottenham but I doubt if he will become a great one.

However, I have to say, bar one excellent pass for the first goal at Reading, I have seen absolutely nothing that suggests he can be a real asset in that absolutely pivotal role just behind the lead striker.

I kind of agree with what you're saying, but just focusing on the Reading game, that's not the only good thing he did - for instance, a shot that was cleared off the line, and the incisive pass to Lennon I think it was that set up a great counter attack which almost resulted in a goal.

My view on Sigurdsson is that I think he got off to a rough start, and is now the pressure to perform is affecting how he plays his usual game. For instance - if your game is based on taking shots/scoring goals, incisive passes, etc, and you play a few poor games in which they don't come off, you start to become hesitant and worried about making mistakes. Basically he's probably thinking 'what if I try these passes/shots and none of them come off.' That's a confidence thing. He just needs a good game imo and will get back to his best, as well as developing some understanding with other players.

Personally I still like what I'm seeing from him, I think he has excellent movement and better vision than I expected when he joined us. I always knew he could take a good shot but I didn't realize that he's also always looking for the incisive pass, even though it hasn't been too successful in the first few games. I'm sure he will improve and I actually think he will be a great player for us. Only 22 and will improve further imo.

God anyone would think these players had been with us for years.

next is to say Siggi was a bit of a panic buy in the summer, square peg in a round hole,... off to Liverpool in the January window...

because he's been at Spurs so long,.... too early for this?... :sorry:

(please digest with a full seasoning of sarcasm - it's not even October yet)

if we have Parker in the team we can afford to play sigg as a VDV

??
Come again? We play him as a an attacking midfielder now in a similar position to VDV. Why would Parker make such a difference?

If you are alluding to Parkers defensive abilities we already have Sandro so I don't see how Sigurdssons position would be that affected with Parker returning.

I think Gyfi is getting to grips with the team play. i think personally he will be judged on the goals he gets. i wasnt the biggest VDV fan (tho obviously he was talented but not a great team player), his stats wer good in terms of goals and chances created. what i do like is that for my money we can play Dembele, Dempsey also in that role whislt those 2 players can obivously also play out wide (CD) or central midfield (MD) respectively. time will tell but he does seem to have the skill or pace to be massively creative in that role but again i think it will be goals tally at the end of the season and if he getsa into double figures then we should be happy with dat.
Very early days yet to judge/ dismiss any new purchases!

Remember Sandro had a dodgy start - now look at him. The guy was class last season in a poorer team. He will prove himself but he has to adapt to a new system, new team-mates and new pressure. At 22 that does not come straight away.
