not terrible, given that nobody has been trying in the last few matches

And people are starting to judge Ramos already  That's a decent recovery considering where we were in the table. We might've be higher too if it weren't for the players deciding to take their holidays early.

The future's bright, indeed.......

Encouraging, but worth remembering that the same group of players, without the January reinforcements, achieved fifth last season. It is true that since the CC Final there has been nothing to play for, which has inevitably caused us to lose focus, but I would be disappointed if we were much lower. At any rate on this basis we can expect to be back challenging for a UEFA cup spot next season, which has to be our realistic objective in the League.

Would we be satisified with that ? If Everton can challenge for a CL spot with a bunch of mediocre players why not us ? A few squad reinforcements and why not ? Personally I am not excited about the UEFA Cup - there are too many flaws in its rules. E.g. Rangers should not even be admitted into the competition let alone geting to the Final. Finishing 3rd in the CL group stage should lead to elimination not reward. Only 2 clubs per group should qualify from the UEFA Cup group stage and the qualifying round should be done away with. Also the draw for last 16 and last 8 should be separated not done as one. Qualification via Intertoto and Fair play are also pointless. The competition is too long and drawn out.

For sure the Uefa cup is made a joke by the CL teams coming into it. It was no doubt designed to add credibilty to the competition by having 'bigger' named teams involved at a later time.

In reality it simply degrades the Uefa cup to the status of CL wooden spoon prize.

If I had the opportunity to set the arrangement of the cup I would stop the CL 3rd places teams coming in, I would erase the league stage altough (go back to the straight knock out 2 leg competition) and give the winners of the Uefa cup an automatic place in the following seasons CL (I know this also looks like a degrading of the tournement, but it would add extra reward to winning it)

Yes the UEFA cup set up is a joke but it gives us a chance to play in Europe. We have had some memorable nights over the last two seasons that will long live in my memory.

That's pretty reassuring given the state of the team and results over the past month or 2. With something still to play for our results would have been even better (hopefully!)

With a team that was struggling for form and confidence he has vastly improved results.

From the start of a season... oh my god, it's just too enticing to think about, I think I'm going to cream myself!

Come on the summer and a bountiful period of top-class signings!

If we're gonna highlight the UEFA cup problems it needs to be said that Uefa messed up the entire european scene.

CL should be the winners of the country and the cup holder. Do away with the qualifying rounds. Every National champion should be put through. I dont care if they are crap compared to Real, Inter or Man U. They deserve it as much as the next team do. Bloody hell liverpool never even won the Prem and they are always in the CL, ABSOLUTE JOKE!!

Uefa should be the next 4 league sides. At least it would gain its credibility back with teams like barca and Milan competing in it.

fa cup winner should be the Cup winners' Cup. Bring back the CWC!! This was a true Underdogs competition!!

If I were organising it thats what i would do.

PS: I really think that they need to change up the League Cup too. You either invest more money in the cash prize so making it more appealling and preventing the top teams from entering reserve teams....or you go the other way and put a maximum age limit of 25 or under for Prem teams and present it as a showcase for the young talent the teams have. At least giving them a proper opportunity to get action and show what they are made of

But it's only really in England that the Cup matters. In France 4th division teams have won the Cup in recent times. That's the main reason why the CWC was scrapped.

Celebrating being 6 points off 6th place is a bit strange given the last 2 seasons, but for various reasons, I agree that table makes for decent reading.

One stat I'd love to see is Ramos' results the 2nd time he's played a side. I think I'm right in saying that the only games we've lost under Juande are the first time he's faced a side (Birmingham, Newcastle, Utd cup, Arse league, etc). Now, that really does bode well for the next campaign.

Great stat Oddie, except Brimingham did the double over Ramos. :-(

I think that's pretty impressive, given that our season was pretty much over and we had nothing to play for after about 14 games of Ramos's reign.

If true (has anyone actually bothered checking it?), then that's pretty reassuring and quite surprising. I'd have expected our results to be mid-to-low table instead of mid-to-high. It's still only 1.5 points per game (ppg) which pro-rata would see us with a 57pt season (barely good enough for eighth this year), but considering his start was not merely standing but sliding backwards and considering the team have effectively had nothing to play for but their professional pride for the last few weeks (and that they've been playing against teams which very much have something to play for), I think also that it's not bad.

I'm not going to say Ramos will bring us the success we crave - we've been the destroyer of too many manager's reputations through the years - but I think he's earned the right to be judged after a pre-season and after he's had a chance to really impose his methods.

And we can't take the Birmingham defeat to mean anything as it was his first game and he hardly knew the players. If I remember correctly, Clive Allen was entrusted to prepare the team for the match.

Fourth league game, seventh overall.
