Something seriously wrong?

Been thinking about this and I am starting to worry that there is something seriously wrong with the squad.

I think Dawson pretty much sums it up. He was always a technically limited player but you could always rely on him to dig in and give a base level of performance....looking at him in the last few games he just seems a shadow of himself.

Essentially what you have out there is a team of strangers....can you imagine Soldado and Ade have talked for more than five minutes together?

Would you say Lamela knows where Holtby is from???

Do Chadli and Capoue know each other exists????

Just an impression but as a fan there just seems to be absolutely nothing to tie our players together...no cohesion..no mutual respect or understanding..just Lamela worrying about fitting in, or Vlad worrying about how he will adapt to the English game, or Ade looking to make his big comeback, or Soldado worrying about his goal scoring record...seems like nobody could give a shit as to how the club is doing.

Now you might argue that this is normal..after all we took on a lot of new players....but assuming you agree that we are not playing as acohesive team at the moment, the big question is will these players ever play as a united team?

There is usually a core team of dedicated players at a club and fringe players are gradually introduced and essentially indoctrinated into club practices and cultures. We do not have that and I worry this will never work.

Have a horrible feeling that it will be years before we get back to where we were with a talented group of players all pushing for the common cause.

Thoughts?

We lack a spine to the side, a leader and we keep changing our manager every 18 months or so whilst buying a new squad in the process most of the time. It's to be expected. This season its been made even worse by the fact that we don't actually have a consistent starting XI.

Sure we lack a leader, especially in midfield. Just look at our todays midfielders:
Eriksen - 21 years (at the club for 4 months)
Siggy - 24 (at the club for 1 year and 5 months)
Chadli - 23 (at the club for 4 months)
Holtby - 23 (at the club for 1 year)

In other words - they are kids in this league.

There's no team spirit.

They've had 3 managers in the last 2 years. King, Bale, VDV and Modric have left.

Even players like Parker and BAE would have added to the positive atmosphere in the club.

There is something wrong, and it lies much deeper than the form or ability of Dawson that's for sure. I don't know if it's the way AVB instructed us to play for so long or if it's the personnel but like said, there's just no cohesion at all.

No unity.
I was purring all over our signings in the summer, but it's not working out.
I want Hudds back; I want Gomes back in goal; wish we hadn't spunked 26m on Bobby Soldier. Shiiiiiiiit, I even miss Harry!

Well we sold our last world class player and decided to spend 100 mill on quantity instead of a few genuinly class players. Then we decide to sack the manager mid-season without a plan behind it.

It's a shambles.

We just need to get into a rhythm. It's hard when you make so many wholesale changes to the team, especially one that relied almost exclusively on one player to dig them out of the mire. Then add the fact that they now have to unlearn everything AVB probably tried to drill into them the last 18 months. I know Sherwood is trying to make big changes to the way we play and line up in order to pull results out of his arse but perhaps he needs to change things gradually. They've been playing a certain (albeit flawed) system for over a year now and suddenly in two games they've had to drop everything and start a new system.

Once we start grinding out a few wins in a row then maybe we'll find a bit of stability.

It will all come together. It is going to take time and no matter how impatient we are that's it. We need time - so get used to it.

Too many changes have taken place and the new coach and players need to find their feet. This mess isnt going to get better tomorrow but I can see things improving soon enough. We have too many good people involved at th club for it to stay dross forever.

How many times have we read this or come across this situation for the last 5-8 years. We are never out of transition simply because we change before we allow the transition process to mature.

Thats the plague that is ruining our club

For whatever criticism's there were of Harry (and there were many), what you could say is that he understood the importance of a players personality as well as skill and technical ability. Of course he gave leeway to players with genuine talent and who could turn a game. However he also realised that he needed players that would make up for what may be a lack of desire in the 'special' players.

IMO he understood the need of a type of player who acted as a binding agent. It's akin to having the most beautiful cherries, raisins, sultanas and almonds; they are most definitely not an xmas pudding without some standard eggs to bind them together.

With all that players like VDV, Bale, Modric, Ade and Lennon offered to the side, they would be ineffective without the likes of Palacios, Parker, Keane, Gallas, King and Fridiel. Good players may even bind on the pitch, they will never make a top, top team though without that binding agent that keeps them together off it; Harry knew this and there is no compensating for experience in this regard.

Dawson and Sandro, as far as I can see are the only real 'boys' in the squad. Dawson is clearly passionate, I sometimes wonder though if he is educated enough (both in the game and generally) in order to be able to inspire and communicate his own philosophy and work ethic to his subordinates.

The obvious question to ask at press conferences the is; who's our bit of egg!

This thread sums up what is exactly wrong i believe with the squad. Not enough leaders or personality. Eriksen needed Scotty parker screaming at him in the 2nd half and Chiriches needed Gallas cajoling him.
We suddenly look like a completely different squad of strangers.
The players need to step up, its not tactics its time we need.

Agree, and a consistent starting side. Tim needs to figure out his preferred XI pretty damned quick. It needn't even be our best XI, we have enough depth that whether it's Eriksen or Holtby (clearly not both), Sandro/Capoue/Paulinho/Bentaleb, Townsend/Lamena/Lennon. Just f***ing pick an XI and give them a run of games to get to know each other.
