*Cliché alert*

At the end of the day players want to play and now we have such a large squad we have to field a strong team for the Europa. Maybe Rose shouldn't have played but it's no good having a first choice XI for the league and then playing the kids in the cup leaving out senior members of the squad who are here to play first team football.

Yep

I'm a pragmatist, times change and football and thus Spurs must move with those times. Wenger may have trouble doing his coat up, but he has an amazing 14? years of CL qualification - I'm dead jealous....I really am.

Spurs c2013 must get to the CL. Whether I like it is irrelevant.

I could alway go and watch rugby if I don't like:( .........nah too many rules.

I can not understand that at all, how anyone can rather finish as a runner up then a winner baffles me. Pointless playing/watching anything if all you want to be is a loser.

Get fed up with these claims about a Mickey Mouse trophy. We have a European history, and when we are in the tournament we should be looking to win it.

We have squad depth that we have never had before and all need game time as during course of season they will all be needed.
Although not at same level as Champions League, though there are still some weak teams in there too, it gets everyone used to playing European football and the demands of 2 games a week in readiness for next season.

Sure you can pick up injuries in the tournament, but would that be any different to CL? We have to learn how to deal with those scenarios. We also need to learn how to balance it all to ensure that we competing in CL whilst finishing Top 4 each season.

Go and talk to Wigan fans. I bet they would swap their cup win for a EPL place. It's an example to the change in the financial setup in todays football. Only two things truly count for clubs our size EPL and CL. The rest are great fun and a day out for the fans. But in Football 2013 they are not "winning" - look at Liverpool and Dalglish, 3 trips to Wembley and still sacked. You don't spend what we spend and class cups as "winning". Its harsh I agree but for Spurs now, its where we are.

I'm not disrespecting EL, FA and League Cup but now they are just second tier. Worth winning yes but not a priority as they were 20 years ago.

Football is and always has been aligned to financial clout. Like nearly if not all sport.

Its why Swansea thumped Valencia the other day. The swans are now far richer. I felt for Valencia.

I have no idea what Wigans fans would say ( and you are only guessing as well), we are not Wigan we are a top side who with the squad we have should be looking at WINNING things NOT finishing among the losers ( top four). I would pack in all in if i thought like you.

That would be very sad - but its how I see it - but its modern day sport right across the the board. You cant go back to the 80's and I'm not sure it was that rosy back then.

Of cause I'm guessing re Wigan - surely it would be common sense to want to stay up, rather than win the league cup. Or put it another way would you rather be relegated and win a cup?

Its no big deal parklane1 - don't let it get you down, its just us chewing the cud....

I don't really see the issue. We've got the depth to make it work. I wish we had more youth to bring in to the side, but it can function as a great way to keep our backups match fit and in form. Luckily, none of the injuries we have right now appear to be very serious. Once the 6-8 guys who are currently out due to injuries or extenuating circumstances (i.e. Ade/Chiriches) come back into the fold, we are going to be able to fully rest some of our First-choice starters. And, just being honest, I could easily see us being out of the C.O.C. after Tuesday. It's just a shittily-timed match against a side that can be decent.

You do make good points Steve. I don't agree but they are good points nonetheless.

The EL is most definitely second tier nowadays, but that doesn't invalidate it's use for squad development, particularly in the early rounds, nor for the experience it gives the squad when the more elite of the competition are faced in the latter stages.

One thing I will agree on is the use of more peripheral players in these early stages, giving them match time and the ability to integrate better with first team players. But this means that some first team need to play too.

I think AVB recognises this and has tried to find that balance. We might not agree with some of his choices but that will always happen, regardless of who he starts with.

In the end, regardless of our own thoughts, we have to respect that AVB will plan his teams on achieving the maximum results for us.

I only require one thing to keep loving this club, that is the ability to be proud of it.

I'm not a robot programmed to love Spurs, If we lose our pride, I will stop supporting the club, don't get me wrong, I won't find another team, I'll just stop.

I am proud of the fact that we treat our opponents with respect.
I am proud of the fact that we aim to do the best we can whenever we can.
I am proud of the fact that we don't let fear, in this case fear of injury, guide our decisions.

I don't need us to be the best club in the world, I don't measure my love for the club in success, nothing would make me more proud of us than winning the Champions League, but considering no matter how hard we try to do that this season, there is no chance as you've got to be in it to win it.

If there is one other thing I refuse to accept, it's lack of effort. If we lose because we just aren't as good as them, fine, I'll accept that, but I'll never accept us losing because we did less than we could.

For me, every single game we play is as important as another, it's another chance to watch my favorite club show no fear and go straight for the jugular even if the beast we're facing is twice as big and has claws that would frighten even the gods.

/end Propaganda piece.

A real fucking Spurs fan (y)

Well i guess we will have to agree to disagree about this (y). What i will say about Wigan though is that the fans have seen them struggle for years in the Prem, now they have had a great day out at Wembley ( and won THE cup, first major trophy ever) and in two weeks time will see them play a European team at their ground. So i am not sure that they would feel bad.

And in a year or two, especially if they're back in the Prem, they'll have forgotten the disappointment of relegation this year, but they'll never forget the year they won the cup!

I agree - Because they are not prime objectives the do not stop being objectives as are the other cup competition.
I personally think we should have kept Carroll and or Livermore as understudies for for these competition.
AVB put these guys out on loan because we a have so many new player to bed in. I in hindsight we should have kept them for the very same reason because we have so many 'new' players.

Thats probably what portsmouth thought!

I agree in the main though. Cup wins are great but they are not these days seen as progression for the clubs. Its the fans who call the shots and the attendances are the barometer. Only 29k for Thursday @WHL I read somewhere.

I can't see Levy thinking twice about the EL other than being part of the season, but no money will ever be directed toward winning the EL. Not in its current guise anyway.

It truly is more of hindrance IMHO to Levy's and Enic overall goals. The PR from a win would of course not be sniffed at - but there, for me, would be little focus.

Winning the EL would be worth in the region of £25 million to a club like Spurs - some 10-15% of our entire turnover.

And given that Levy haggles over the last £100,000 of every deal, I think it's safe to say that he will at least give the Europa League a second thought.
