Well, according to Greg Stobart that is. Not sure if any ITK on here know more about this case.

http://www.footballtransfertavern.c...journo-reveals-why-spurs-man-has-been-sacked/

And then add Moussa Dembélé who failed a medical - and Spurs failing to persuade Christian Pulisic to sign despite of him having had trail before signing for Bor Dortmund. (ok, Bor. Dor. is one the best clubs there is in developing talents and add that USA players have a good track-record in the Bundesliga, which must have swayed him anyway).
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is another top-player that Bor. Dor. signed after keen Spurs interest.(http://www.skysports.com/football/n...ttenham-move-after-weird-negotiations-in-2012)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he will never sign for Tottenham due to 'weird' negotiations with the club in 2012
"If Spurs ever came back in me for me, I'd say no," said Aubameyang.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year revealed how he almost signed for Tottenham four years ago following prolonged talks with the club when he was playing for St-Etienne.
But the move never materialised and Aubameyang was frustrated with how Spurs conducted the negotiations.
"In the end everything became a bit weird, I didn't really like the way things were done," Aubameyang added

I'm not sure a thread would cover all the players we 'could' have had. We'd need to dedicate a whole new site.

Happy with what we have for now.

Can't sign 'em all. Signed a few good ones though, Dele etc.

Absolutely. In Kane and Alli we have basically £200m+ of homegrown talent, probably both the best in the league at what they do and we only spent £5m.

That's a pretty big tick in the "win" column.

It is a bit concerning how we've let quite a few gems slip through our fingers!
If you consider every transfer in isolation maybe, on the whole our recruitment is excellent and I'm pretty sure the vast majority of prem clubs would swap our recruitments over the last few years to theirs.

Wonder what was weird about our negotiations? Weird clauses? Actual negotiations rather than caving to unreasonable requests? Levy conducting negotiations whilst atop a pogo stick? o_O

Not bothered Moussa Dembele tbh, he's had a decent campaign, scored a few against Man City but apart from that he is playing in a league which is really about league one standard, still a talent but if he failed a medical or we decided to look elsewhere I think there is a reason for that.

Pulisic is a crazy talent, but we have many talented kids who play in his position, most notable of which is Dele Alli, but also Marcus Edwards in a few years we hope.

Aubameyang was an error on our part. However, again had we signed him would of Kane ever been given the chance? Probably not.

The thing about all of these examples is we actually haven't lost out all that much in not signing them, people have come in and filled in. Yes another striker would be useful, but not sure Dembele is the answer. Most successes from the SPL in recent years have been defensively minded players while who was the last striker to come from the SPL and be a success in the PL? Henrik Larsson I think. Meanwhile since then, Kenny Miller, Gary Hooper and Vennegoor of Hesselink have all looked out of their depth in the PL.

The OP was refering to Ousmane Dembele, who signed for Dortmund this summer. Yes, we really could have had a team of Dembeles...

IIRC and this is pretty sketchy memories, so please excuse..... we were dead keen, we'd given the impression everything was in place on our side, then once he got onboard with the idea of coming we didn't respond for days as we had other irons in the fire - think we might have been haggling on price too. Anyway, he couldn't reconcile how we'd gone from super keen/needs to be done ASAP one minute to vaguely interested the next and in the end he was pretty happy to blow us off for Dortmund after we'd been mucking around.

That was my recollection. If anyone knows better please jump in and correct

Ousmane Dembele and Christian Pulisic.

Jesus...what talented young players to have in one team. I have a soft spot for Dortmund because I appreciate how they run their club and do their business. Reminds me a lot of how we do ours, to be honest.

Winner for "could have" and not "could of".

Think of all the teams that didn't even consider signing them. We are doing something right. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes and make the proper signings in the future. No use wondering what could have been.

I don't believe this Greg Stobart is genuine ITK. He may have been once but he isn't anymore. He's just making stuff up to drive traffic to his website. Ousamane Dembele was a well known prospect, not some secret known only to scouts. He had many clubs interested in him but concluded Dortmund was best for his career - before this he'd decided staying at Rennes was best for him, so he was never available for some ridiculous knockdown price.

I remember when we could have signed Rivaldo. He wrote us a really nice letter too.
