Probably for the best.
We're not "above this competition" as some people like to claim those that think like me are, just that at the moment, we've got bigger fish to fry.
More time for Conte to work with the squad during what is an increasingly busy schedule.
Seeing as you literally say it straight out, I can understand why some people claim that :playful:

I'm referring to the current covid situation and the backlog of games.
Not having to traipse round Europe midweek is a good thing at the moment, in my opinion.

Can't wait for a CL team to get the same treatment, what a joke.
The stupid thing is UEFA would create an exception for CL teams and then wonder why few clubs give a crap about their other club competitions.

Happy as this means we might actually get to play a Saturday 3pm kick off at home. Forgotten what it feels like.

with the log jam of games coming up, its probably a good thing, typical Levy to go for the cash grab though

What constitutes a "CL team"? We were one only a couple of years ago, perennially, befiore we sacked the manager who got us there and kept us there.

Do you mean a mega-rich team? Not the same thing.

I'm assuming he means a team that's currently still participating in this seasons CL. But this is SC so i'm probably wildly wrong :D

We have been treated very unfairly by UEFA in this situation. Their attitude to COVID is completely irresponsible. Things have not been helped by the self-serving and unreasonable attitude of Rennes and Vitesse. Hopefully these nothing teams will be knocked out of the competition as soon as possible.

Better we're out cos we were never going to win it. We saw how we played the 5 games we did turn up for right? Players didn't want it and we don't have the squad to challenge on 4 fronts.

All the games we would have had to play to get to the final and the embarrassment had we lost that. Nothing to gain except a few quid. We couldn't even be proud of that trophy because noone would let us forget its a tin pot cup.

Woulda liked to win it 20 years ago but we've more ambition now.

In my book, ambition means trying your best to win whatever competition you're in. City are ambitious. They didn't bin off the League Cup because they were above all that.

I'm delighted. We need to get back into the CL and I'd even say we're now favorites to get 4th.

Playing in the conference would seriously risk that. It's simply not worth it

Am I the only one on here who is sorry to hear this? OK, it may 'only' be a 'tin pot cup', but I think we had a good chance of winning it, and it would be one more trophy then we have won for a very long time. Realistically we have at best a slim chance of being in next years Champions league, and getting some siverware in the cabinet would, I believe, have given the whole club a boost.
I would normally agree with you and historically in the early rounds of the EL I have enjoyed the chance to watch our youngsters play.

But this season has been awful, watching some of those group games has been painful. Honestly rather us go out than watch more of our squad players pottering about like they don't give a shit.

We would have to play full strength to win it and with the games in hand and the English cups it would destroy us.

So basically I don't think we are beneath it, I just can't stomach watching our squad players act like it is beneath them.

It would be the equivalent of watching England B against Andorra and being shit.

It's a no from me until Conte turns us into a proper squad, with players who actually want to play.

A&C is correct I'm referring to a current CL team but you could throw in the mega rich requirement as well! As I'm sure the reaction would not quite be the same for all teams.

The difference is that the league Cup has not become embarrassing to win yet. This new cup has no prestige for the players and would totally undermine efforts in the league. They definitely played like they didn't respect it and I doubt nuno or conte talked it up much either.

Hoping for some poetic Justice of Rennes. An COVID outbreak and them having to play their U23's in the ECL.

Think it's the right decision personally, exactly the same situation as last season with orient. Can't be happy that went in our favour and moan about this. And, I have more sympathy for orient than us - I struggle to believe we couldn't have put out 13 players and a goalkeeper whereas orient had literally no alternative

I'm not fussed about being out of the ECL, but:

The Orient game couldn't be rescheduled before the subsequent round of the competition was due to be played. I believe that we would have needed to reschedule it to week of the 4th round and then, assuming we won, have played our 4th round tie over a month later than everyone else (potentially while they were playing their QFs, which we would then have needed to play after the hectic xmas / new year period). Therefore, it wasn't logistically viable for the game to go ahead.

The Rennes game couldn't be rescheduled before an arbitrary deadline of 31st December, but the next round doesn't start until 17th February. Therefore, it would have been logistically viable for the game to be played during January (or even early February). Theoretically the game could have been played on 6th, 13th or 20th January, as neither side has any midweek games during January. For UEFA to not offer this flexibility, but instead insist that we'd have to play 4 games in 8 days to accommodate a reschedule in December, is pretty farcical. This shows that UEFA has very little regard for its own competition.
