On the Radio last night it was said our first 11 cost £48 Million total

Not bad up against the current batch of squillionaires...

That's pretty amazing really isn't it? Certainly blows the theory that we over pay for players out the water. I wonder what the teams we're up against cost?

But I've heard from 'reliable sources' (Arsenal and Liverpool fans) that we're shit, with crocks at CB, the worst LB in the league, a poor but pacey RB, overrated wingers, an overrated moneygrabber in CM and CF  I've also heard from here and other Spurs fans that we're the 3rd best team in the league with worldclass players in 8 out of 11 positions - so I guess we're all wrong and we're somewhere in between?

For me, it's just great that Spurs are being talked about so positively on tv, radio, online and in the workplace. Someone (not as Spurs fan) said on Talksport that he rates Spurs along with Barca and Real Madrid as the three teams that are the best to watch. Who knows if we can sustain it for another couple of years, but I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.

If we could get back into the Champions League, and in doing so attract another couple of headline signings, we could very good foundations for success over the next three or four years.

Really? A quick check....

GK (Friedel) - Free
RB (Walker)- £5m
CB (His Majesty)- Youth product
CB (KAboul)- £5m
LB (AfroEkotto)- £3.5m
DM (Parker)- £5m
CM (Luka)- £16.5m
LM (Bale)- £8m
RM (Lennon)- £1m
ACM (VDV)- £8m
CF (Adebeyor) - Loan

Total: £ 52m according to my calcs (and memory), but lets be honest... circa £50m for a team that sits in 3rd on merit... Billionaire investors = Fools.

Our team seems settled these past few games where the other teams around us have rotated quite a bit. Maybe Arsenal are the only team that have also kept a settled side of late.

I really think our biggest test will come when injuries/suspension hits. Right now you would have to say that our 4-4-1-1 formation is about as balanced as it's ever been with everyone playing well.

But what happens if VDV gets injured? More than likely Defoe will come in and we will lose vdv's ability to arrive late in the box and clinical finishing.

If Adebayor get's injured then it's quite simple, we have no like for like replacement.

If Bale gets injured maybe Townsend could come in as a like-for-like type of player but he's still very untested at this level.

If Lennon gets injured then we have Pienaar/Giovani who could come in and although none of them can go on the outside like Lennon, the way Walker is owning the right touchline lately means who ever is at rm can tuck in a lot and this should suit Pienaar/Giovani a lot more.

I was thinking about who would get in our current eleven from the teams around us and taking form and injuries partly into consideration. I say partly because Rooney is a little off form at the moment and he would get in our first eleven, obviously, whereas Torres's lack of form has more a chronic feel to it

Anyway just for fun and this is highly subjective but I'll try and be objective  (not thinking of formations necessarily either)

City (6)...Aguero, Silva, Yaya, Balotelli, Kompany, Hart

United (3)...Rooney, Nani, Vidic

Arsenal...(3)RVP, Vermaelen, Wilshere

Chelsea...(3)Cezh, Cole, Mata

Liverpool...(2) Suarez and Reina

If I could mould my own Spurs team out of that I would go with:

Hart

Walker
Kompany
King
Cole

Yaya
Modric

Suarez
Rooney
Silva

RVP

Subs...Bale, VDV, Aguero, Parker, Reina, Nani, Vidic

No.
Just...no!

Benny over Cole. Bale over anyone. VDV over the perv.
Suarez and Kompany can kiss my hairy arse!
I'd probably only take Hart, Yaya and Kun - maybe Rodney but i'm not sure...he is a twat.

If

Bale, Modric, VDV, Parker or lennon get injurd Sandro comes in. Adebyor getting injured is a bigger problem.

Ade, King and Ekotto, in that order are our 3 most vulnerable players interms of what replaces them atm. I'd normally have King top of that list but Gallas is a bettter shorterm replacement for King than Defoe is for Ade...imo

Well we bought Kaboul for 12m or 13m from Auxerre didnt we? then sold him for 6m to Pompey and for 5m back, surely this has to be considered somehow also, that way Kaboul would be more than 5m IMO. Even considering that its amazing how much we spend on these players.

And only after watching that list I realised that in one way or another Kaboul, BAE, Lennon, Bale and Modric are all bought by Comolli or am I wrong?

Harry added with Friedel, Parker, VDV, Adebayor (Gallas) something important it seems all those players lacked. Experience. Looks like a good balance of both is always good.

Back to topic (most likely biased):

As a collective I think we're only behind City.

Apart from Lennon, who I'm sure will find back his best soon I wouldnt swap anyone from Modric, VDV, Bale, Parker.

I would only swap Friedel for any of the other Top GK. Not because they are worlds apart but because of the Age, we most likely have to replace Friedel next season at the latest.

I think Adebayor on form is not far off from the other strikers. But problem is for him hitting that form. But if possible I would probably take Rooney, RVP, maybe even Balotelli or Dzeko.

So all in all I think only those 3 places are needed that we are the best team in league.

Like i said, probably a little biased

Lennon has been injured but in the last few games has been outstanding imo. At his best he is the best right winger in the prem. He also scores important goals and works his socks off.

This squad, team and manager (yes bear/Coyboy/Bomber/etc I just said that) are capable of getting 3rd this season. After seeing what is around us we really don't have much to fear. Keep believing in ourselves and come the end of the season we will 100% get 4th as a minimum. I really am getting more and more excited as the weeks go by. What a send off it will be for Harry and a fantastic base to start with for the new manager, if Harry does choose to go to England, if we could secure a CL spot and a trophy!!!

Gracias for the acknowledgement.

3rd is ours to lose, but I don't think we're as good as we think we are and in Feb/march, we will drop quite a few points.

I think we'll finish 4th, despite having the 3rd best team

I think we are as good as we think we are but sometimes I don't think we are as good as we don't think we are . I should give up thinking.

as a massive st helens fan (rugby league) I am a member on their biggest website.on this site there is a football thread to which I contribute on a regular basis, being in the northwest the large majority of fans are liverpool man utd man city and everton with four of us spurs fans.the city fans see us as their biggest threat,I know they hammered us but they think parker has made all the difference.the utd fans think that unless they buy big in the window they are going to struggle, they also think parker has made us formiddable.the liverpool fans just feel that we are a better team than them and all the everton fans want us to win the league

I keep thinking 'City will win, but maybe we could put in a real challenge for third' but we are seven points behind with a game in hand, and until we play them in mid January we have one tough test in Chelsea - they have Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in the league, a big CL game against Bayern, Arsenal in the carling cup (and a potential two legged semi if they beat woolwich)....if, and its a big if, but if we keep this run going, we will be right in there.

We do still have City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea away, and Utd at home, so its likely that any title bid would stutter with those games, but if we keep beating everyone else then I think we can get third, outside chance of second if Utd get distracted by Europe.

CL football is obviously massive, but given the way the club is run and what the expectations are, it hurts other clubs much, much more if they fail to make the CL. If Chelsea don't make serious questions will be asked of not just the manager but the players as well, and maybe Abramovich will give up, Arsenal could lose RVP and any other decent players, Liverpool might have tighten the purse strings....it really is an opportunity for us to push above them not just in the short term but long term as well.

But I like us flying under the radar. Everyone expects us to fall away, but then they would have expected us to drop points since the Manchester games and we haven't.

Walker was 4m, Bale was 5m

Bale was an initial £5m rising to £10m depending on various bits and bobs, but as Southampton needed the money we paid an extra £3m to finish the deal, so £8m is correct for Bale.

Yeah the pundits in Ireland (where I live) haven't paid any real attention to us. Our top pundit is our ex national manager John Giles and I agree with the vast majority of things he says, but when asked whether Spurs can be considered genuine title challengers (after the WB win) he replied 'they haven't been tested yet cos they've only beaten small teams'. He obviously forgets we beat arsenal and Liverpool and has ignored how our two new signings have changed things....

under the radar though - no harm in it. :)

Yeah but Jenko, Johnny Giles lost his marbles a long time ago, he can hardly remember who he has just watched to comment on. Plus he has a huge chip on his shoulder re Spurs, from his playing days.

I am keeping all talk of 1st/2nd/3rd to myself, and hopefully we can carry on our merry way.

I speak mainly to Liverpool fans, as my cousin is one, and they think we are playing nice football, but still think they are more of a threat to top 4 then we are. I would hate to hear what they thought of themselves of they had an attack more potent than a cup of weak tes.
