So who then can we purchase who uses brain first, brawn second in the carrick mould? i dont have a clue

This is the whole point of the thread! Who is there? Did the board make such a big mistake in selling Carrick that he's (for us) un-replaceable?? No matter how much money we got for him?? And in the same case, will selling Berbs for 30 mill get us a guy to truely replace him??

NO.

Damo Como and his team have got some serious work to do to replace him!! Theyve failed miserably so far! Bong, Zokora, etc. Forget about these athletic types, we need a footballing type FFS!

I'd say to compete we need a top GK/ a CB / a LW/ 2 CMs

So

Gomes / Metzelder or Mertesacker / Capel or Diego / Lucho or Diarra or Appiah (he'll be well for next season)

I`ll take Ronaldinho for left winger, Gattuso or Poulsen for holding midfield and Kameni for GK in the summer:)

good analysis but add to that a CB as Woody and King as a combination are too injury prone and our back-ups aren't as good as the likes of alex and wes brown and agger etc. SO yea we need a GK,CB,CM and MABYE a LM.

I think I'd like to see us play a 4231 next season. I've been living in the US and other than the Prem, Fox Soccer tend to show Argentinian and Italian football. There is such a huge difference in the technical ability of the players between these leagues and ours and often people claim these more technical players are too lightweight. In a 442 this is probably true, but if we played with 2 deffensive midfielders, we could then use 3 really technical players behind a main striker. Lille have shot up the French league since they've paired Makoun with Mavuba. I'd like either of these 2, but also think JJ and Zokora could play similar roles. Neither Mavuba or Makoun do a great deal more than win the ball and play it simply, which isn't really enough in a Prem 442, bit in a 4231, it is different. Now we have Modric, I'd like to see us add more technical quality and play them in front of a strong and athletic deffensive midfield pairing. Something like this:

------------------Berbatov

----Arshavin------Modric-----Larsson

------------Zokora------JJ

Bale--------King-------Woodgate-----Hutton

The vision and technical ability of that front 4 would be very hard to defend against, whilst JJ and Zokora would give us energy and strenth in the midfield and also by playing as a defensive midfield pair (like Makoun and Mavuba) they'd have a much smaller and more defined role which I see is vital as I'm not sure either of them can play to the standard we need in a 442 (I'm certain in the case of Zokora). The likes of Lennon, Keane and Steed can also be very useful in this formation (as the 1st choice 11 are rarely all fit at the same time) and also give us the option of 442 if we need to change during games.

Lille really slumped after Bodmer went to Lyon; they've only lost to Lyon and (mysteriously) Auxerre since about mid-December, and that can hardly be unconnected with Mavuba joining—although they're still not pretty to watch.

I agree that 4-2-3-1 could provide Zokora with a perfect niche; he's grown a lot on me since the ACN, but I still think he's too limited for a 4-4-2. In fact, it's Jenas who'd concern me—how can we have a DM who's a worse tackler than Scholes? If anything, Hudd might be better employed alongside Zoko in that set-up.

That's the beauty of the system. That particular role is so simple and basic that there are a number of players who could do it. Everton sometimes play a similar system with Neville and Carsley both playing in deffensive midfield roles. Like you say it isn't pretty, but it makes the team very hard to break down. You don't really need a great deal of talent to play the role effectively (as Nev and Cars show). It's about the most basic role in football. Taino would be another player really well suited to it. Basically if you have two deffensive midfielders, neither of them need to be world beaters. The key is to have real high quality technical players in front of them.
