Match Threads Spurs v Barcelona - Match Thread

We'll look different in these bigger matches with a healthy Vertongen and Eriksen and with Davies and Trippier on the bench where they belong. That being said nothing except a transfer window is going to fix our midfield which is by far our biggest problem. The midfield needs to be blown up in it's entirety. Nobody is good enough there if we want to compete for trophies.

Messi was completely outstanding tonight. Masterclass. Doesn't help that we gifted them two goals aswell.

I believe we could have given this Barca side a really tough match if Eriksen, Alli, Dembele etc weren't injured.

I think Eriksen would’ve either been great or awful depending on how he dealt with the press - Alli I can’t see suiting that game at all given the slowness of his reactions and decision-making.

Well it didn't end as badly as I feared 20 mins in. Lloris, for every great move he made coming out to clear he made a shocker as well. Why didn't we show that fight in the first half? Yeah the early goal hurt us but for 25 mins in the second half we went toe to toe with them. Winks suddenly looked like the player before his injury, we were fighting for every ball. Sissoko... well I've said it a hundred times on here that he shouldn't be anywhere near our first team. He's stealing a living as a footballer. Still it was good to see the Spurs from last season for 25 minutes.
We are always a second half team, you must of noticed.

I’m not going to knock anyone and we gave it a good go despite injuries.

But - Lloris looked awful - what the hell was that in the first minute? Needs dropping - bring back the Gazz
It won't happen, because Poch reckons he's the best GK at the club and wants to play him into form.

It’s not been proven time and time again. He did struggle tonight and a few other times vs top opposition but do we have anyone else who would do better? I think not

Whi would do better then dtxspur??? Aurier was injured and more of a liability defensively and kwp is inexperienced and not ready for a match like tonight

Lads. It's Barca. Dele and Eriksen in there, our players actually in form... We could have drawn. Chin up! Liverpool lost. They ain't so imperious.

Always very critical of dier but he did well when coming on tonight - was stable.
Not really. He displayed 2 of the things that have made him a liability. The 4th goal could be rewound to him being unaware and lacking aggressivity for a 2nd ball in the center circle. Messi stole in because Dier, a purported MF wasn't aware of what was around him and didn't check is wing mirrors...a common occurrence.

Earlier in the game he also was aware and passed a shaky ball back to Toby, who then had to send a slightly desperate left footed ball all the way across our defense to Sanchez. This ball was almost pressed (should have been considering how shit Sanchez is on the ball) by Alba. He could be somewhat excused because Lloris played the ball up the center to him but he really should be aware.

Stuff like this is what most don't recognize when they say the player they love played decently. There are also the potential plays that he spurned because he didn't recognize runs or wasn't prepared or able to play certain balls. We need an upgrade on him and everyone else in the MF for the first XI.

Our slow midfield basically puts our defenseman under immense pressure. Davies and tripper are liable to get fucking blitzkrieged as well which means a lot of the defensive stability resides upon our CBs. We often start both of them with our midfield. No wonder we're conceding a lot. That whole group is weak defensively and slow. It's fairly obvious where our weaknesses lie, especially if rose and the like are injured/rotated and KWP isn't given a crack

Our defensemen were shit, Toby aside, but our goaltender doesnt inspire confidence, much the opposite in fact. Our Midfield were slow and sloppy so couldn't transition the ball to our offence.

On your thinking I'd hate to see Lloris have a bad game

Give me a rundown of the other things he did badly wrong. FYI getting beat one on one by Messi and passing to sissoko when's he's in crap loads of space don't count as problems.

I think the WC involvement is becoming a convenient excuse. It's over for more than two months! Seriously how long do they need to rest? Surely a few weeks of good long sleep helps. No? Some of them can still go partying and down some drinks...

I agree it’s an excuse but they haven’t been resting, they’ve been playing football every week.

Do you understand the meaning of the word rest?

I personally thought he looked awful, shaky, negative passes, the cross aiming for Llorente at the end was comical

The main difference between Barca and us (and 99% of other teams) is the crisp accuracy of passes and the understanding of movement off the ball, we don't do either of these things very well, we're too slow and predictably methodical.

Do we really need to go any further than a ridiculous gaff in the opening few minutes that puts us one down against on of the best teams in Europe.

Personally he scares me every time the ball is passed back to him.
