Not one bad performance today, we matched Villa's effort and work and outplayed them on all other measures.
we still look like a team getting it together rather than the finished article but it's growing, in fact you could see that happening through the game. That back four and Hojbjerg & Skipp in front is now fixed and I'm hard pushed to change that front three. Ndombele had his best game so far, ok I know he's only had three, so him and Lo Celso are the picks for the other position which is as settled as we've been thus far.
The new boys all nailed it today, Romero is class and looks completely at ease with players running at him and his competence gives Dier the breathing space he needs to cope.
Emerson Royal really found his feet today, he's bedding in nicely and even found his confidence to get into Villa's box a few times.
I'll include Skipp in this group too as he's really staked his claim.
Gil ok didn't get long but I swear he looks stronger each time I see him.
That was a different team today and I don't just mean the effort and that they played better I mean they looked more like a team and that will get better bearing in mind when we get in the groove the strikers won't snatch at `chances, the goals will come.
I know it's only one game and one swallow does not a summer make but I'm not looking at the result or even the performance really, I'm looking at something deeper, things look like they're starting to sync and I'm more optimistic.
Another bonus, on the way home hundreds of West Ham fans got on my train at Stratford and they really did look glum.

Son was the difference and it's such a coup that he signed up for more 4 years with no drama or bids this summer. And it looked like Kane was building some form here and staying higher up the pitch.

It was good to see Emerson play a decent game and beat a guy to the goal line for a cross. I've been pretty wary of him so far based on what we'd seen - never taking his man on in attacking positions and playing square balls - but he did pretty well defensively and offensively. Hopefully our back four is set for a while now.

Other than that, it was good to see the team compete and not allow too many chances. It was a scrappy game for long spells, but Villa weren't up to much and we easily deserved the win.

Finally, I wonder what Dele thinks this season looks like for himself. I think it's a long way back for him now and he doesn't fit into a fragile side - he makes it more fragile when he does play. We haven't been able to accommodate a high number 10 in a while and I don't think his reinvention to a deeper midfielder is going to get him much game time either.

Of course he's not top class yet, he's 21 playing his 2nd full season of professional football. He has to learn to become top class, but it's clear he has the skillset and above all the mentality to reach that level.

Just say he's doing a good job, and leave it at that. We look a far better team with him than without him.

Haha you proved my point exactly.

So are you saying we shouldn't be allowed to comment if we think a player could be improved upon in our starting XI?

Winks got the same treatment when he first came through and Carroll.

What a ridiculous comment to make on a forum where people are invited to share their opinions. Especially when mine was positive about his potential.

Soucek, Rice, Bissouma etc. are a level above him and all playing outside the big 4/5/6 we'd be better with them in our team. Hopefully he becames even better than them and I think he has the potential to do so.

It was but Villa had three or four tackles that were just as bad that went unpunished. The lack of consistency from the referee was frustrating, especially given that the player who was singled out has also had a couple of very dubious decisions go against him already this season and is now facing a ban.
I know. It was poor refereeing across the board, but I do think that one was a clear yellow. The ref let them rough us up so much.

Big Smoke has to be a WUM

The only things he has posted are abuse towards Spurs players, the club, the manager etc, and a post about how lovely Man City are to watch.

I think I know full well where he's come from.

Winks and Dele out of the picture and the team produce this performance

Those cancerous duo should be permanently banished from the first team.

Still dont rate that portuguese fraud though.
Idk about you guys, the guy is certainly a WUM, but I completely agree with Big Smoke here...

I live 7 hours time difference to the UK and am not always able to watch games live. It is therefore VERY annoying that after watching the Spurs game and coming on here I have people telling me the scores from other games that I have not watched but may do later. This is the match thread and other teams results are irrelevant to comments about our game. They should be reserved for a thread in General Football.

it was a better performance it could hardly have got worse - the spine looked stronger Dier Hojberg and Kane had his best game of the season - Skipp is very mature for a young lad Son had their right back on toast , Royal looked more aggressive going forward - Romero is a real modern centre half he tries to nick the ball very aggressive he just needs to temper that sometimes for their goal he doesn't need to go there.

The performance was much more together I would like to see us clear our box a bit more from corners and I really think we should leave at least one up maybe even two for corners - I am not sure that N'dombele or Son provide much defensive cover and I think taking two or 3 players away from our goal might make defending a little bit easier - but I know that's Lloris preference

Maybe we needed that kick up the arse from last weekend? That coupled with a big win on Thursday and also with the crowd behind them today really helped the confidence.

I had that enjoyment at Victoria but it was also doubled downed with pissed off leicester fans on top of West Ham ones. Very amusing.

I was right behind Lo Celso when the ball made its way to him. The keeper left so much room for him the find the far corner, it was harder to miss it. Poor finish. It would have been a beautiful goal otherwise.
Watched it back 3 times now. Near post was the shot needed to score. Defenders throwing themselves on the ground in the box. I think he was looking for a pass. No other reason not to shoot to the near post imo

But look how many lines we had today, so much harder to play against for other teams than a flat 433. Nuno has had a lot of deserve stick but he got it right today.
There were times when we were pulled out of shape and looked like schoolboys chasing the ball.
During the game there were periods of pure lack of organization and amaturish positioning.
We won and I'm happy with that- but it sometimes didn't look all rosey to me (I know I'm just a bloke on the net- but that's what I think)

because in the box on a corner is all about pushing and shoving, height and power.
Son would just get squidged.
With the shot, control and technique that Son has- I just think that he'd be better deployed just outside the box to smack a clearance into the top corner tiz all

dele needs to reinvent his game somewhat to be in contention. needs to get the ball out of his feet faster and get into the the box asap. Every time he dawdles, he loses the ball cause he wants to make the killer pass. simple pass and move would suffice. Instinctive dele is so much better than system dele
