Was a strange performance, definitely not near our best but what I liked was we kept going for that incisive pass, they often weren’t coming off but eventually they will, can’t have it both ways and complain about the safe back/side pass that we had become accustomed too in previous years.

On a side note, find it weird that we’re the only team that blocking the goalie on corners seems to have become the main tactic. If refs are really now allowing that not sure why the other teams aren’t doing it each other every match, including us. When it’s allowed it causes havoc anytime a good ball comes in. I know they’re saying it’s a Vicario weakness but any goalie fouled the way he was v City and Everton would struggle…

View from the south stand:
  • One of our worst team performances in ages, no energy at all
  • Movement was non-existent at times and gave us little option on the ball
  • VDV is class and saved us from a hammering
  • The whole team hates Werner. He had so much space and clearly the beating of his man. So many times the ball over the top pass was on to him and we didn’t do it. It was so obvious and so frustrating.
  • Worst game from Maddison in a Spurs shirt and almost as bad from Bentancur.
  • PEH came on and almost cost us several times
  • Johnson was poor/weak but took his chance well
  • Sonny was a different class and we immediately looked a better team with him on
  • Udogie was injured, hence the sub was changed last second (Skipp was coming on but swapped for Ben Davies)
  • Their time wasting was ridiculous and they got what they deserved from it
I was in the South stand, I think the performance was OK apart from the first 30 mins. Though the geezer on my left would definitely agree with all those points :cautious:

We just need to pass a bit better in midfield and finish our chances, so many ended without a shot.

Sometimes you have to.

Cant complain.

However, I hope Ange never makes subs like that again, we had finally for control of it and those subs took it away.
Just gonna clarify this.

The subs I would have no issue with, this isnt necessarily about not wanting a player on or off.

It was the timing.

We finally looked in control and the whole stadium had erupted, Deki and Bentancur were growing into the game and really starting to influence things.

Ange knows a hell of a lot more than me but the smart thing would surely have been to sub Son on for Werner as we were starting to get in behind their defence and needed to take advantage of the momentum we had.

Deki and Bentancur stay on until they tire or we make the game safer.

What ended up happening was we had to then readjust as we now had no players able to drop and hold the ball.

Brighton clocked onto that real quick and made changes to exploit it.

Ange had to then make 2 more changes to give us some stability back but it lost us some attacking verve.

Fortunately we were able to get the win but I cant help feel it would have been much more comfortable if those 3 changes hadnt been made then.

I don't care how we win and this is the first time I have genuinely felt Ange has made a big error (unneccesary).
I guess he was thinking we had space to run into to get speedsters behind.

I also think its why Johnson struggled. Deki was making that space because of his strength on the ball and seeing tão players off it at times.

Johnson didnt have the stability when he came on and probably was a little panicky/nervous.

We could easily have lost a game we should have taken control over.

I hope Ange times the subs better in future.

Still, he is instilling a never die attitude and I am glad it was Johnson who got the winner.

Very disappointing display but we at least got the points. I assume we will spend much of the time before the next game learning how to pass to one another .

For someone who hasn’t played since Christmas, Mitoma looked really good again as always. It’s probably not possible unless his new deal has a release clause, but I’d be thrilled if we tried to move for him this summer. That chance he created for Fati was exactly what we need, he’s as close to a true Son successor as we’re likely to find anywhere.

How many games in a row are we scraping these wins at home . Everton, Bournemouth, Brentford now Brighton . Sooner or later our luck is going to run out unless we start games properly and giving teams a battering and going 2-3 up

To be fair we had breathing space against Brentford when we got our 3rd.

I do agree we need to be more clinical and also pass a lot better than today, but let's face it how many times did the likes of Arsenal grab unimpressive 1 goal victories this season.

Plenty to work on, but finally we have some proper time before the next game with all afcon and Asian cup players back. Just need a few to hit their early season form again.

We have played 24 PL games and scored in each and every one of them. No other team can say that, not City, Liverpool or any of them. We are making our own luck. When we properly click what could we then be capable of? Look out Premier League!

I love the fact we are still moaning about performances and attack yet we have just equaled the record for most goals scored in consecutive games. So much growth yet to come from this team but still so much still going right atm. Good times ahead.

This!
At times Deki had two or three little terriers snapping at him and they couldn't get the ball off him.

I honestly think it will go the other way and our luck will improve as our passing balls through will get sharper as the players get sharper and we'll take more of the chances we create.

got a bit lucky, but always take the luck. Impressed with Brighton - they work hard all game and dont give you much time or space.

Only caught the second half. Some recurring themes from this season - a little too lax with possession when a player is facing our own goal, struggle to break down low block teams, very good when there is space in behind the back line and we exploit with quick interplay on the break to exploit.

A couple of players look like they need a little break/refocus. I do think we lack clear, quick thinking in the final third when we are not playing the ball into space - too many crosses hit the first man, not enough give and gos, and I think Werner showed he is useful but Son just looked so much more lethal with his intent, glad to have him back
