Big selection decision for Redknapp on Monday. If he doesn't go for Defoe over VdV I reckon Defoe will soon be on his way out. Nine times out of ten I'd pick VdV, but I think we have to go with Defoe for this one.

Are you mad? 4 goals in 2 games against villa last season!

What he did last year doesn't make a big difference - only a small consideration I reckon. This is what I posted on the VdV injury thread:

Fit/unfit isn't black or white. There are varying degrees and if Harry picks VdV in these circumstances (i.e. VdV has a hamstring niggle when his major injury weakness is his hamstrings and we're playing Aston Villa at home) then Defoe would be right to think long and hard about his future at the club.

Now, it may be that Defoe doesn't have a future with us, but it's a long season and I think we could do with a settled and happy Defoe. And it will protect VdV from injuring his sh*t hamstrings with him coming off the bench at half time if needs must.

If VDV is deemed fit enough to start the game he will start, it really is that simple.

I have to say that while I rate Defoe I still think he's below the level of our best players. It's not that he won't get you goals (though last year he didn't), but that he doesn't do anything else for the team. As long as VdV is scoring as he is, matching Defoe and more in the goal scoring department then he wipes the floor with him in every other area of the game.

For me Defoe is a top six player, but not really a regular top four type player.

I think that is the gerneral concensus (though some may not even rate him a top 6 player).

had to post this from a Villa forum, probably one of the worst assessments I've read regarding us lately, particularly regarding our defence! :

'This isn't a great Spurs team, that's for sure, undoubtedly better than us, but I look at Spurs and I don't see a top quality side, plus, they have shown this season that they can underperform and be vulnerable when teams actually attack them.

For me they have three objectively top class players in VDV, Modric and Bale but that's about it. Adebayor is top class when he feels like it, but he is inconsistent. Some Spurs fans talk up Lennon, but he's a headless chicken at the best of times and still hasn't learned how to deliver a final ball properly, and he probably never will learn.

Also, Spurs have a weak defence. Their left back can't defend to save his life, he's useless, and surely an area we have to attack. Corluka at right back is hardly reliable either, I don't rate him and I'm sure Gabby would give him a lot of problems. I also think they lack quality at centre half, Dawson is a fat lump, Gallas at the arse end of his career, and King who may or may not play probably their only good bet. Plus they have the old goalie we gave them in Friedel, someone who can't claim a cross and whose reactions are slowing down.

So we have some hope, BUT, our defence is a massive, MASSIVE, worry for me. Hutton is dreadful and will get destroyed by Bale, I hope we either play Herd there or even Cuellar. Warnock is hardly reliable on the left hand side either, and Dunne and Collins, well...'

Wow that's a whole new level of stupid. BAE can't defend to save his life? Then he slags off Corluka, Gallas and Dawson...not exactly three players that have featured much (or at all) this season? Oh and he completely forgets that Walker...a player that played for his mediocre team last season, is our main RB this season?

What a dick. Probably doesn't even know what a football looks like.

I love the notion that Benny is our weak link, people can keep believing that all day long.

I also hear people say he's better going forward than defending, which is nonsense. Walker is probably better going forward than defending at the moment, but make no mistake Benny is first and foremost a solid reliable full back.

People love to spout lazy cliches or borrow phrases from what a pundit might of claimed months ago (I'm looking at you Hansen )

The guy clearly doesn't have a clue, Gallas hasn't played this season, Dawson and Corluka havn't featured much....

The mind boggles

Thing is, I've heard fans of other clubs talk us down even more than that and the common theme is always our full-backs in particular, along with the rest of our defence. The Villa fan who wrote that doesn't seem to have watched us much this season though - Corluka, Dawson and Gallas? They've played about 2 hours football between them this season! You'd have thought a Villa fan would be aware that Walker is our right-back now seeing as they would have bent over backwards to sign him on a permanent deal!

As for the comments about Benny - I'm used to hearing similar from my brothers (Liverpool fans) and my housemate (MK Dons fan). I've given up arguing so now I just say to them, 'you just keep thinking that and we'll keep him long enough for him to become a club legend thanks'.

Oh, and as for the usual cliche criticism of Lennon's final ball - he was one of the top players for assists in last season's champions league and any goals compilation for Defoe in a Spurs shirt will feature a lot of crosses from Lennon. Not to mention 3 assists and a goal in his last 2 games.

I hear you, it really does irk me though when you get people writing stuff with such conviction when its just plain wrong. I was nearly tempted to join said Forum to begin correcting all over the place then sense kicked in....would you really be fucked?

Important announcement :

For those of you who don't yet know, we have people working undercover for us at Villa. They have been specifically assigned to spread false and confounding details of our team formation.

So, please refrain from any further comments on the subject, as this will endanger our plans and may derail our strategy on the matter.

Thank you.
