went over to Billericay and was disappointed in the u21's they won 4-1 but the side looks very disjointed and makes to many simple errors - it was played on a plastic pitch which takes a little time to adjust to but it really ought to have given the boys a bigger advantage - they really should have been getting the ball down and dominating the game but the midfield in particular was all over the place wth no one really showing for the ball -

Nile John was poor he was pushed up but failed to impose himself on the game , he really is at cross roads he needs a good loan where he plays- but on tonight's showing I can't see the queue being very long to take him

Bowden another he didn't really affect the game he needs to go and take the ball off the centre halfs if the the others are going long come short and create some space - for me there was such a lack of cohesion in the midfield and maybe those two suffered from it - the opposition were poor and sometimes when you play sides your superior than it can be hard you all end up wanting to take an extra touch and it kills any momentum but that shouldn't be an excuse

Santiago is good on the ball scored and created a goal but he reminds me of so many young wide players he needs more to his game if he is to make a breakthrough but he can play

It is pre season so there is time to improve but given the level of the opposition I would expect to see more there was a big lad playing number 8 I thought he had some promise though he tended to over do it and I think it was Mundle playing 7 (it wasn't as he never played ) he again has some promise

Donley looks like a player took his goal cleverly but needs more but time is very much on his side - Patoski played right back I just read I thought it was the lad from Reading on that showing right back isn't his strength

Defensively they didn't have a lot to do the keeper the young Irish lad and the centre half made a right rickett for the goal probably the keepers fault cb needed a call. Some of the passing from the back leaves a bit to be desired

All sounds bit negative but its pre season so if your going to make mistakes its not a bad time to do it I am sure they will improve

Rumour has it that Troy is going on loan to PNE.

Preston tend to play a 352 with 2 forwards. They had about 7 attacking players last season including Scott Sinclair (released), Cameron Archer (end of loan), Joe Rodwell-Grant (released), Tom Barhkuizen ( Derby County) who are no longer with the club. Main forward is 6"3 Danish player, Emil Riis Jakobsen ( finished the season with 44 app/ 16 goals/ 5 assists), they also have Ched Evans (age 33 ) and Sean Maguire (age 28) who both combined for a whooping 53 appearances across all competitions, where they contributed 4 goals and 5 assists total.

What does that mean for Troy if the loan goes through? If he can stay injury free, plenty of starts and opportunities. Troy did end his last season on loan, albeit in League 1, with 47 total appearances, 10 goals and 7 assists. Also, keep in mind that while Troy was on loan at MK Dons, he did play at RW, LW, SS, CF, so that would have impacted his output. I think this could be a good move for him and I'll certainly keep an eye on his progress.

Article in the Mail regarding Joe Shields who is probably responsible for us losing the 2 boys to Southampton. He has just gone to Southampton as head of recruitment having previously been head of Man City Academy. So would have been well aware of Amo and Meghoma.

Do we know who will show the uefa youth lge games. It has always been BT sport as they have the contract for European competitions. Or will Spursplay be involved.

really happy with this. Having Defoe at the club is huge for me
Totally - this is a positive step.

High quality players, who will not only hopefully impart some knowledge and experience, but (frankly) young players will probably react well to such high profile recent ex-players

Smart move this

Yes smart and positive and great players who will have the capability of inspiring our young players. But all of the above will be lost if they haven’t got the coaching skill sets. Let’s hope they do.

Don’t they say you cannot coach goalscoring. It’s just an instinct to be right place, right time.
Yes and no. Defoe was famous for his low back lift, a la Ian Wright, which meant he took less time control the ball and place the shot than the average striker. He was also famous for shooting with power rather than placing his shots which - if the shot was on target - gave the keeper less chance of reacting to it. I'm not saying that's all JD has to teach but he was far from an orthodox striker. I was never a fan of Defoe, myself. I felt he was very limited.
