donley was just an example
my point is it would be good for u21 player X to play for the u21s the next day, if on first team bench week after week and not getting minutes
Phillips is nearly always on the bench and still playing the U21s. So i am not sure you really have a point of them playing always the same day.

well he cant be both tonight, he could if the u21s played tomorrow
Obviously tonight its not the case...

Edit: have looked it up. Its the third time this season they collide. If they would play tmrw, it would be shit for Sunderland, so nothing to see here.

you saying no u21 player will ever make the bench?

I was only commenting on this specific game.

Donley has made the bench before this season and that was due to the amount of injuries we suffered and lack of options.

He's talented but unless he has some sort of breakout performance that facilitates that permanent inclusion in the 1st team, he's likely not going to be ahead of those players I listed, at the moment.

Feels like the only real opening’s for an U21 player X is for Phillips/Dorrington as 3rd or 4th choice CB and possibly Santiago as a wing option while we’re missing Perisic and Solomon, but Gil would probably take those minutes. I love to see academy players make it with us but it’s never unfair if they don’t get an opportunity because they have another talented player ahead of them in the pecking order. They either have to show better performance in training or injuries have to occur for them to stand a good chance in a squad that’s as stacked with quality as ours. Dorrington and Phillips have a pretty clear pathway which is great because they both have a good shout to make it for us as first team players, they’re amongst our top talents IMO. Santiago’s chances aren’t nearly as good IMO. Donley’s chances of being our level are good too but he’ll still have Gio and potentially Kulu moved inside as a 10 to get past, very far from easy.
