Another local game for me down the Abbey but rather a disappointing performance.
I suspect the loss of Phillips, Santiago, and Veliz was a bridge too far for them as they were 3 of the biggest performers in the last outing at Peterborough.
We brightened up at the end when Cambridge started to tire and gave us some space/stopped pressing.

However, I was impressed by the 15-20 minutes that I saw of Damola Ajayi.
He looked strong, kept the ball well, put in some decent passes, and looked quick. We got a goal back when he came on and I felt we should have carried on feeding him as he was finding space wide on the left but we made the mistake of playing too centrally in the final third.

Tonight the physical gulf between the two teams was more apparent and we struggled to hold onto the ball or win enough second balls.
It's a shame as I think if you add the physicality of Phillips and Veliz, alongside the attacking threat of Santiago it would have been a closer game.

We might potentially see Donley make the 1st team bench this week or later this month. Sounds like Richy is set to undergo pelvic surgery, which will likely keep him out for a couple weeks, if not more.

With the injuries building up do we have any players other than Phillips and maybe Donley who look like they could be added to the first team squad and actually play? Dorrington or Abbot maybe?

I know it’s only one match but wasn’t impressed with Donley last night, seemed slow & easily dispossessed too many times.

I've seen lots of highlights and catch games online when I can and it's clearly evident that Donley has tremendous eyes for both a shot and a pass. However, he looks devoid of any real athleticism imo.. He's certainly not afraid to get stuck in, and credit to him.

I've thought this for quite a while and with each game it's only reinforced, but he quite literally moves and plays with the same stye and gait as Lo Celso.

iirc Ajayi was training with first team during pre-season, definitely one we should be looking at

He struck me as one of those players who if he didn't make it as an out and out left winger could easily become a progressive LB in our current system or a LWB.

Thought that as well. Anges midfield gave to run and then run some more. You cannot just wander about in midfield. May count against him in the long run.

Possible Donley is carrying a slight injury.

HIs pressing this season has been an outstanding part of his game. He's relentless when 100% so no worries about his engine.

As for gait and speed, it's worth bearing in mind that he's put on a fair amount muscle mass in the last 1-2 years so still growing into his frame.

It's possible it's made him a little slower on the turn, until he's done the strength work to enable him to shift that additional weight from side to side.

Mikey Moore scored a hat-trick today for England U17 against Croatia U17, in a 5-1 victory. Callum Olusesi was an unused sub.
