It’s been a good window, but I’m disappointed we haven’t arranged more youth loans. They can be so good for a young player’s development.

Other clubs seem to have less problems getting lads out on loan. Tommy Bloxham who was picked up by Blackburn after leaving in the summer as one of the few second years to fail to secure a professional contract, has just secured a League Two loan at Harrogate.

Good on him, but is he really that much more in demand than our table topping U21s? It’s certainly not because he is more ready physically. Watching his progress at Blackburn, where he scored on his debut, must be a little depressing for his immediate contemporaries, most of whom have been struggling to break into the U21 team because of the log jam of players.
It would be fascinating to get a greater understanding of how the club, and other elite clubs, look at loans.

Do they get lots of offers but turn them down, or do they have to work harder to get the loanee clubs interested? Is it the financials of the deal (both ways), is it game time, playing style, getting players out of their comfort zone?

Do we think they develop better or ‘in the right way’ if they stay? Do some players turn down the loans? Are we burnt by experiences (or lack of) of the past?

Why do some clubs send their players abroad vs down the football pyramid? There are just so many questions

Simple answer is probably a mix of everything you mentioned.

Each player is a different case. Some a first team manager may want training and involved in and around the squad, some may be felt as if they need to develop further with more game time in senior men's football etc.

Would be a fascinating article/documentary if someone out there can put one together.

Is it me or do our under 18’ and 21’s always have high scoring games. What is the reason for this, is defending not a thing in youth football or is it more about concentrating on all out attacking

Is it time for Moore to go up a level to u21s? I’m not sure how this works but he seems far too good for this level.

I also ask because some seem to have a science with this youth development. One of the Bergvall videos talked about a template or a plan that gets followed. Something about 5 or 6 sub appearances followed by 5 straight starts then back to sub appearances then completing 3 straight 90s or something when you go up to the next level

Its a mixture to be honest and depends on opposition, spurs have a really strong academy compared to teams like Norwich/Reading at u18 level, but then as you get to u21 it becomes more competitive depending on those with more men’s experience or not.

but need to consider that many of the u18/21 are at their footballing level now, so won’t actually get any better too, so it can be lighter in some areas.

further to that the teams are hardly ever the same too, many u18’s will play u21, u21 maybe in first team squad, u16 pushed up to u18’s - all down to development, overload, fixtures and injuries so very unlikely any team fields the same 11 on a regular basis

I’d say Hall was closer, Moore is still only 16, id imagine his physical development is being guarded very closely, but I imagine next year he’ll feature more for u21 if he continues as he is, there really is no need to rush him

The premier league app also holds lots of this data, pretty sure all the other apps nab them from that site

Im not sure if this has already been discussed, but some interesting quotes from Ange about the academy needing lots of work.
He’s got this part spot on at least:

“I guess if young players don't feel there is an opportunity here maybe we don't get the best ones or maybe we don't provide the opportunities for the best ones, so my role in that is to make sure the good ones we have do get an opportunity.

"And secondly, other young good young players around the country, not just around the world, see this as a club where if you are talented, you will get an opportunity."

It’s such a hard balance to achieve, I can only think of maybe city as a club that are bringing through and maintaining levels, but that’s more down to being able to breed youngsters supported by 10 other world class players!

Man Utd. Have had a youth player in match day squad for a hell of a long time. Probably back to Busby.
Currently have Rashford, McTominay and Mainoo. Do you count Garnacho who was bought from Athletico Madrid at 16/17.
Would have mason Greenwood as well but for him misbehaving.

FA Youth cup qtr final draw Man City/Reading V Spurs/Bournemouth!

couple of dream draws for my lad, he needs the game of his life to get past city and then an even harder challenge of our boys likely to await in the quarters!

Yeah good point they definitely started it off doing it well, not so much these days (successfully), Liverpool do it on a slow basis.

mtge issue it’s it’s literally 1 maybe 2 players tops that do get to that level

I’m not sure his first team appearances are a good indication of the type of player Donley is - he seems to have come on in midfield and done more work near our own box than the opponents, when in the youth teams he was the main goal scorer and striker to begin with but the last 18-24 months he has been played as more as number 10, creator type.

I think he has strong mental skills (determination, work ethic but also game vision and awareness), technically good, and probably just needs to enhance his physical capabilities from a good base to become a PL standard player in the future.

What happens between now and 1st Sept will be key - he either needs to make a good breakthrough this season or be on loan at a top half championship team from the start of next season so his development continues.

certainly has potential

I think the fact his getting game time and seems to be getting the time a head of other players must means they are getting him ready. Maybe next season he will go on loan, or he will be Maddison’s understud.
