Love the guy! I remember someone trying to interview him on the radio while he was at a Spurs game and there were gaps because he was concentrating on the game rather than the interview!

My favourite thing about Freund is that he was an agent for the Stasi. He was recruited whilst a youth player for GDR to undertake spying during trips abroad.
Maybe we should get him on opponents' scouting duties. He could bug all the training grounds and dressing room!

I just wonder what they stood to gain from spying on professional football players, that's what I found odd. It's not like he'd uncover much you wouldn't read about in a paper or on the world service at the time.Not odd at all. It was very standard practice in the old East Germany.
