Steven Caulker could be set for a return to White Hart Lane this summer if Cardiff are relegated from the Premier League.

The 22-year-old defender made an £8m switch from north London to south Wales last summer after a lack of first-team opportunities at Tottenham.

During his first spell at White Hart Lane, Caulker had loan spells at Yeovil, Bristol City and Swansea.

But, with Cardiff facing relegation back to the Championship, Spurs boss Tim Sherwood is keen to bring Caulker back to Tottenham.

Caulker's return looks more and more likely given the uncertainty over Younes Kaboul's future.

Besiktas are thought to be interested in the French centre back, who has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons.

After playing for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics, Caulker scored on his England debut against Sweden later that year.

I'd love to have him back, he is a very decent, young central defender with loads of potential and he came through our academy. I'd sign him back even if Cardiff wasn't relegated.

Do we have a first option/ buyback clause of some sort? Do such things exist?

Heard rumours in the summer that we have a buy back fee which is around the same we sold him for. I'm sure Liverpool would be interested in him so we need to get this tied up soon if we were going to try for him.

I seem to remember that we had a discount built in so that we could buy him back for less than anybody else? 20% or something like that.

If it's a buyback clause, it would most likely include first option on him, meaning we may match any bid accepted for him, and they must accept it.

I agree - it's a position they need to reinforce, Rodgers apparently showed interest when he was still with us IIRC, and he played some of his best football under that manager at Swansea. They'll be tough opposition for his signature, considering they'll have CL to offer.

I'd bring him back and let Dawson leave. Kaboom too if he's knackered.
Although saying that, we're not sure whether Vlad is injury prone or not yet.

Just had a read of a few Cardiff forums, and whilst some say he's got good potential, quite a few aren't entirely convinced by him. Included are those who think they overpaid for him, that he isn't that great defensively, and that he isn't much of a leader considering he's their captain.

I wasn't convinced of his qualities from the times I saw him play for us, and although I wanted us to keep hold of him to see if he improved, I could understand the club accepting such a large bid.

There are question marks surrounding Dawson (isn't good enough), Kaboul (injury issues) and Vertonghen (may want to go) come the Summer, but I don't think Caulker is the answer.

We might lose Kaboul and Vert in the summer and people want Caulker back? :banghead:

We need to improve not downgrade!

A case of absence makes the heart grow fonder. This happens a lot with Spurs. When a player leaves, he's suddenly better than when he was with us. Happened with Huddlestone where many were singing his praises yet, he was slated constantly when he was here.

I don't think Caulker is all that personally.

Fair enough, but put into perspective that he is only 22 years old and has had over 3 seasons worth of experience in top flight football (and not to mention looks likely to be a England regular). He has solid foundation to build on and he looks to be improving each season. I would have him back because he seems to be only CB we've had who can score from a setpiece situation.

Can anyone name another young, English centre half under 22 who is actually playing in the EPL?

I remember it to be 30%. IMO we never should have sold and we are now very little chance of getting him back, got Liverpool written all over him unfortunately.

I think verts is more likely to go than stay IMHO.

I've always loved Verts. He's a beautiful man. But we've been appalling at the back this season and Verts has been a big part of our incredibly shaky back 4.

My point - no Spurs fans want to see him leave, but at the same time, he's not Berbatov, VDV, Bale or Modric and nor is he truly world class. For the right price I'm sure we'd deal. But Caulker certainly isn't the answer.

Can just tell by his body language he doesn't really care if he stays or goes.

Hear anything about any big clubs being in for him? If i was a betting man i'd put my money on Barca or City....

How does te discount work then surely if they don't think we're offering enough then they don'r have to sell him. What if simeone offers £100m do we have to pay £70m and if we drop out is the clause dead so they can sell for what they like?
It all seems implausable to me.

My understanding is that if someone agrees a fee with Cardiff and we then match that fee and caulker chooses us when the deal goes through we'd get 20% back. Say someone gets a 10m bid accepted, we match it but in reality only pay 8m
