The club have been chasing this lad for ages. Do you think we're going to try one more time to get him? He's looked quite impressive towards the end of the season!
Maybe Woody can have a word to get him over?

Thanks but no thanks. A good player but one that cares more about his own image than the club he plays for.

The only reason Downing has stayed in boro for so long is because he was happy being the big fish in the small pond.

Would be the wrong move for Spurs in my opinion. You already have enough, players and management, to take 5th place next season. You need to look at how you can make a genuine claim for a top 4 spot. Downing is not a top 4 player.

I agree. Downing is good but he won't get us further than we are now

Yea well he is a decent player, scores a good share of goals and assists. If only he didnt have the english price tag.

If our aim is to break into the top four, then he is not the player we need.

Anyway, I think that Ramos prefers fleet-footed players on the wings.

Contracts mean zilch

Not in this case.

In January he had a year left on his deal and could've gone for as little as £8-10m, he now has 5 years left on a new deal, meaning Boro can hold out for £15m+ if they want to (a bit like how they rejected our £10m bid 2 years ago)

I rate Downing a lot, he's one of the most creative left sided players in the league & is very similar to Bentley - although he is quicker than him.

I'd love for us to sign Downing and being the greedy swino that I am I'd also take Bently for the other wing - that would be immense and provide excellent balance! Then spending loads more money on Veloso and we get this:

Bentley Modric Veloso Downing

A pretty excellent midfield methinks with some actually good free kick specialists!

Downing is quality - but it won't happen now as too many false dawns... We could have had him in Jan if we'd have stumped up the moola!

I totally disagree with this post. I think downing has been extremely loyal so far. But it might be the right time for him to move on now.

The reasons Downing has stayed at Boro so long are:

a, it's his boyhood club (would any of us really want to leave spurs if we didn't have to?)
b, Their valuation of him has always been pretty steep
c, It's taken him a while to mature and weigh up his options to the point where he feels he should leave to win things. (again, if we played for Spurs and Liverpool came knocking, would be have the balls to leave to go to a better team?)

I've spoken to a lot of born and bred Boro fans and they really dislike the guy. A lot of people describe him as an arrogant prick and/or a wannabe celeb. Some of the stories from the Boro fans make Lennon seem modest.

He loves being the centre of attention in Middlesbrough, that is why I don't think he will be a good player for Spurs. He is a good player but unless he changes his mentality I don't think he wil fit in with the rest of the squad.

I want us to sign players that are more interested in playing football than appearing in the newspaper or getting their leg over.

Downing and Bentley on both sides. We're about to invent a new tactic involving wingers without a dribble.

Funny, you've just described Woodgate pre-his move to Spurs
