I think a lot will depend on the improvements of certain players.

CCV, Onomah, Pritchard, N'Jie and Son could all be ready to start making more of an impact next season. Lamela might be ready to go from first team player to being a central point of the team.

I maintain that one or two quality signings would be great. I wouldn't be against signing no one if other players are more developed to step up.

As with all ITK the advice is to take with a pinch of salt. All I'm saying is a small handful of high class additions to the areas needed, not mass change, is the way to go in the summer. Ideally early on in preseason too, but then we know Levy...

Such a myth

I remember some of the threads on Liverpool buying big early in the window and when we bought most of the magnificent seven before selling Bale. Didn't really work out for either club.

We very rarely have the whole squad in place for the whole pre-season, do we? That's as much modern football as Levy, but it would be great to make three key signings before pre-season starts.

Do you really need me to break down the reasons for this? It's already been explained 1000's of times on here.

I'm hoping Newcastle go down and are totally cannibalized. I'd like Perez the most out of their squad. I think he could nudge Chadli out as a backup to Lamela and Son.

I'm still on the Berahino train. I still think he's a proven premier league commodity that fits our system. Though I wouldn't be upset if Batyshuai was on our radar.

I'd also like some more clarity on who will back up Dier. If it's Ball in CDM, that's fine, otherwise we may need to shop for that position. Also, if CCV is ready then I'd like to see him contribute heavily in preseason and cups, otherwise, we really only have 3 CBs with Dier being a permanent midfielder.

Finally, I love Mason, Carroll and Bentaleb, but given the gap in quality between those three and Dembele, I'm starting to worry about our midfield depth in CL next season. Also, if there really is a link with Youri Tielmans then that's something to be excited about.

Ultimately, we could sign just 3-4 players (ST, CDM, WF/CM, CB) and we'd be set for a CL fight, but it all requires Poch to bring along all the young talent, especially Bentaleb, CCV and one of Mason/Carroll/Pritchard.

Ben Yedder was linked in January, 5ft 7in, so no giant, but only an inch shorter than Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero as an example of how his height shouldn't rule him out. Could be a decent option as a different type of CF to Kane, given the prices quoted in January, and there were strong media links suggesting we went for him but his club weren't prepared to sell until the summer.
£7.5m for Ben Yedder
£5m for Dembele

Could the sale of Chadli cover that?
Instead of Berahino, Ben Yedder could be the one to give us a stylistic alternative to Kane, as he could also operate deeper or wider. Dembele could give us a more similar physical option to Kane.
those goals form Chadl would see a decent price even hes not the ultimate for our system he owuld work for someone else

after tonight I think we should buy the whole Barca team as back ups, just use them in cup matches and v Arscum twice a season, I'm sure they won't mind sitting on the bench and playing in the odd under 21's match:whistle:

He isn't consistent enough to push Kane.

Harry doesn't need a backup, he needs competition.

He's done alright without any competition this year. The case against signing a higher quality player is the fact they'll want to play and that'll lead to potential tension and /or dissatisfaction (squad harmony hello?) given Harry's preeminent status.

He'll be 31 in the Summer, we do't need any short-termism. I also would guess you didn't want him during his 12-game drought, which ended at the weekend.

Your probably right about the short termism of signing a 31 year old though I was envisaging a strictly backup for the rare occasions when Kane is injured or exhausted. In that scenario a goal droughting Pelle wouldn't be such a disaster given his overall bullish CF style . The kind of guy you can trust to win headers from long balls and have the strength to hold up play.

He's a freaking byson of a man.

Berahino and Witsel wouldn't be to expensive since they are out of contract next summer and would probably blend in quickly.

Add Moussa Dembele to the mix and this summer would me massive.

We have young players who we expect to develop with experience though. There would be no point stopping them getting that experience by bringing in another player to block their path.

Our strategy is not about constantly buying to improve, it's about buying or bringing through young players to develop over time.

Yes. On the whole, at least.
Poch has talked about this, but also mentioned occasionally buying special players - players who can walk straight into the team and improve it (he mentioned Bale and Messi :) ). So I would expect the occasional bigger purchase, but very few and far between. And even then I would be expecting a spending level more like the amount we paid for Son, than the type of money and wages required to buy a fully fledged Bale.

Still, more excited at the possibility of bringing more quality through the youth ranks, personally.

Don't forget the likes of Onomah, Pritchard and CCV will also be a season further down the line. Domestic cups would be perfect for them mixed in to a few more experienced heads.

Those behind the scenes have taken years to implement our development system and it has come at considerable cost too. It was always the plan, that along with the new stadium, we could achieve a sustainable squad able to repeatedly challenge the financially superior teams. You don't just drop that plan when it is clearly paying dividends. This was always a long term development and we need to stay focused on the fact it is clearly working.

True.
Unfortunately, some of our fans were so resistant to this being the plan, or of there being any hope of success from this plan, that they actually seemed angry that anyone would suggest it let alone support it. And now it shows some success they can see past it allowing us to compete with the rich clubs by spending money - missing the elephant stomping about the room. You wouldn't believe the number of times I personally pointed out to the same fans who refer to Levy as a tight-wad that he was actually investing a fair amount in the development system and he would hardy to that if he imagined there was very little chance of it paying dividends - especially him being a tight-wad :)

And on your other point, I think in the post above: Poch has given us a squad that is greater than the sum of its parts. I think most folk agree on that. But I believe some have let it blind them to the genuine quality in our squad. We have an exciting young squad filled with potentially top talent throughout. The only places I would be at all worried about are back-up/competition to Kane and Dier - but even then, particularly with Dier, I hope he can take hold of someone like he did with Dier and improve him. In the youth ranks I like Luke Amos for the defensive mid role. I know and understand the purpose, and sometimes necessity, of playing the yoots out of position. But what are the chances of him getting back to (IMHO) his best position? And do you know if Poch rates him at all?

The majority of position's in the squad have genuine competition for places and it's brought the best out of players.

Kane is 22, the thought of him needing a 'backup' is ridiculous and sends the wrong message to him. He needs someone to push him and keep him on edge. He'll be even better as a result and the team will benefit from it.

I seriously look forward to the game's when he's not selected to start because the other striker deserves to play ahead of him.

I've no doubt that whoever they sign won't disrupt the harmony so I'm not going to think about that angle.

Rotation of our fullbacks would seem to indicate that it can be done, players stay match fit and on form and the squad stays happy.

I think Bentaleb not starting in Dortmund speaks volumes. I believe he will be sold in the summer.

Yes it's always better to ignore potential problems, Tobi. Who do you suggest then as this perfect competition for H?

I don't know but I want someone that's the complete opposite of Kane.

I'm not going to worry about disharmony because of what Pochettino has said in the past.
