I would like a VDV type player.....someone who can score, create, unlock defences. Who that would be I've no idea. But he's out there somewhere.

I don't think he'd work as a full back, he's slow and not really mobile but definitely as a DMF and CB.

The problem is though for that kind of money you are paying him to play you can't really have him as cover for anyone, he needs to be a starter and he won't get in front of Vertonghen or Wimmer and he'll play 2nd fiddle to Dier as a DMF.

The problem is Manu won't sell to Spurs and Spurs won't sell to Manu. Case closed imo.

Alex Pritchard could be that player IMO. If we were to sign a CM, then I think we should go for someone who can create from deep and ping passes around (as well as keep hold of the ball).

Yeah, and we can't afford them.
There are some players we should be able to afford.

Bernard - not done well in Ukraine (but still has more assists in last 2 seasons than Konoplyanka despite only playing a fraction of the mins 1316 v 3519) but if we can get him to his form of a couple of years ago, he only has 2 years left on his contract.

Pjanic - Only has 2 years left on his contract and Roma may miss out on CL.

Zivkovic - only young but could turn into a top player and contract ends at the end of the season.

So, in kind of mulling it over, the moves I would make for a "Wish List" type Summer window:

Buy:
Youri Tielemans - One of the best young central midfielders around. Him and Dier in a midfield two in the future is swoon-worthy.
Option B: Mahmoud Dahoud from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Leander Dendoncker - Very close to what Dier could offer us. When Dier needs to play CB, Dendoncker could slot right in to the midfield.

Michy Batshuayi - Exactly what we could use in terms of providing some real competition to Kane and also some versatility in how we can line up depending on the opponent. He's also got a very good track record of making an impact off the bench.

Sell:
Ryan Mason and Tom Carroll - These moves are done as a result of the purchase of Tielemans, a more promising player.

Nacer Chadli - I hate this move, in all honesty. But, I think with NJie, Son, Alli, Eriksen and Pritchard all being able to play on the left, and funds likely being needed to purchase players to round out the squad, I think Chadlis sale is the likeliest of them all given his age.

Fazio - Pretty obvious.

Pjanic is a great shout. That kid is an experienced, world class central midfielder and I'm surprised that Roma have been able to keep hold of him this long.

The reality is that we can't sit on our hands. Don't get me wrong, I love this squad but we all know that you have to constantly improve in order to continue to compete. Beyond that we arguably also need some experience in what is a very young team. Personally I would have loved to have seen us sign a player like a Cambiasso. The balance between youth and experience is crucially important and as others have said, VDV gave us so much in his time at the club and going into the champions league next season it would be good to have some more players available to us that have played in it consistently.

I've been thinking about who we could buy to provide competition for the DM position and I don't know why we've never tried Vertonghen there. He has all the attributes to play the position perfectly.

With Verts moving into midfield when Dier needs a rest and Wimmer coming in to CB I think we could maintain our style of play without really dropping the quality of the team.

In any case, I've come to the conclusion that we need a good ball playing CB to play the DM roll for us rather than a straight out DM.

I'd guess because he doesn't want to play there, I think he's on record saying as much and is one of the reasons he signed for us instead of Arsenal.

I'd like to see us try to bring in Mascherano.

Loads of experience including in the PL, leader on the pitch, still seen as a "makeshift" in Barcelona and still considers himself a midfielder so not unattainable I don't think. Also after all the tax stuff I'd not be surprised if he'd like to get out of Spain.

I'd like to see us go after Kante. Don't think we'll get near Tielemans but might have a chance at Dendoncker.
