I think anybody expecting us to sign an established star has another thing coming. With the exception of Lloris, every player in an around our first team would have had something to prove when they came to us. Even Alderweireld was coming having not managed to establish himself at Athletico Madrid. That means that any signings we do make will probably be young, potentially be relatively unknown and certainly not be someone currently seen as a current star. It doesn't mean that the players we bring in won't be able to challenge for the first team immediately/ very quickly (see Wimmer, Dier), it does mean that they probably won't be household names and that we might need to show patience with them over the course of next season (see Lamela, Son).

What's happened to Christoph Kramer? Linked with him a lot last summer but he signed an extension at Leverkusen. How has he done this season?

As a lot of others have said I don't expect the transfer policy to change greatly because of the performance this season. We have a manager who likes a smaller squad and leans on all of them to play their part when needed instead of a bloated squad where people are left out in the cold.

The players we are likely to buy

  • Have a year left on their contract and are worth taking a chance
  • Have been on loan and may not be wanted by their parent club
  • an over achieving youngster
  • an international looking to move to a bigger league
If I had to guess who we may be after, I would say one of the Dembele's we've been linked to or someone like Tielmens.

There won't be too much change I hope

I don't want star signings, we've gone down that route and it has by and large failed miserably. I want players that have been identified with the traits to buy into what we are trying to achieve, nothing more nothing less.

If they happen to be a recognised top level performer who is happy to whatever role comes his way then all the better, but first and foremost they must be hungry, energetic and malleable

Clowns on Sky.

Merson reckons Berahino is nailed on to come here in the summer. Straight away, that tosser Stelling pipes up and asks "to play with Kane or replace him".....Merson didn't even answer his point it was so pathetic.

Fucking do my head in they do. Desperate to see any decent player shack up at any of Sky's fabled big four. Even when you may win the title, they still think your best players are all wishing they were fighting for top four at United or top six at Liverpool or Chelsea. Nobs.

Aane as last summer for me. A defensive midfielder (we may need more than 1 next season) and a striker (same)

struggled this season so far. In the beginning, couldn't adjust to the pressing game with the highline that Leverkusen play (much like us), as he was used to sitting back with Moenchengladbach. He sat on the bench behind Xhaka and Dahoud and was injured out for a while too. Only recently getting more game time after Xhaka got injured.

Guys I know it's a long shot, but what about a cheeky look at Ben Arfa? Is a free agent in the summer and has had an incredible season. Is really capable of beating 2-3 players in a tight space and has a wicked shot. He has just found a way back into the national side too, having his captain around could be good for him?

I know he has been known to have a bit of a shitty attitude, but with Lloris around, and him actually playing for a good side contesting for trophies (as opposed to Newcastle and Hull) maybe worth a punt?

Alternatively, he could be just like Taraabt or Ade and a utter twat?

Ben Arfa? You're Arfing a laugh... He got subbed for Hull City at Old Trafford for having run less than the goalkeeper!

Also, don't suppose many people here are impressed with Kirchoff?? I know he had a horrendous debut against Spurs, but has put in Motm performances week in week out for Sunderland, another one today, as backup Dm for Dier?

I think your getting confused.. Xhaka & Dahoud play for Gladbach & Kramer play's for Leverkrusen.. so how can he of sat on the bench behind Xhaka & Dahoud.. In general he has been playing ok & started today at CB & played well

I think that's it.. they have to have the work ethic & even if they were the most talented of players if they are going to be big time Charlie's & p*ss & moan if there not playing without putting in the effort then I don't want them

You are right. I got totally confused. Kevin Kampel and Lars Bender were injured recently and he's getting more playing time lately. Anyway, not a good season. Today, he's filled in as one of back 4.

Leverkrusen season has been disrupted with so many injuries & they have suffered from not having a settled side.. I think Kramer has suffered because of that.. I still don't think he has played badly it's just one wk he is the more attacking cm the next the holding & his midfield partner has changed to often imo.. He done well at CB today played some lovely crossfield balls to both flanks.. he uses the ball really well from deep... Tah had by his standards a day to forget.

I only really got involved in the Bentaleb debate because people were saying he was back up for Dier. I have no problem whatsoever with him potentially occupying one of the CM spaces, as long as it doesn't bear the defensive responsibility. He might develop some defensive awareness over time but I have my doubts and in this respect I think Dembele is way ahead. I also think that although Dembele is very conservative with the ball, he is very good at maintaining possession in high pressure situations whereas Bentaleb isn't as progressive in carrying the ball and tends to play quick, easy passes instead of taking responsibility. With all of that in mind, I think Dembele has been the right choice this season. I wouldn't be averse to losing Bentaleb if it meant bringing in somebody with a fuller skill set. My choice would probably be Dendoncker.

Did Dendoncker have a fuller skill set aged 20 than Bentaleb ?

I don't get the analogy of Bentaleb making quick easy passes as taking less responsibility than Dembele making slow easy passes? What's more responsible about taking longer to make equally simple passes (which is what Dembele does). Statistically Bentaleb passes the ball forwards more than Dembele, and he does it quicker and I think that is a characteristic that suits Pochettino's philosophy. I accept, always have, that Bentaleb has some learning to do on the defensive side of the game, more about positioning and taking responsibility for tracking his man than actually being prepared to tackle, which I think Bentaleb has no problem with, he's tenacious enough and has a bit of nasty in him, but I think in many games the defensive nature of Dier combined with the ponderous nature of Dembele, whilst being defensively a very robust pairing, is a bit lacking in zip and progression. Sometimes we need to move the ball forwards quicker and many games - in Poch's obligatory 4231 - I'd have liked to have seen either Dier/Bentaleb or Dembele/Mason as CM2 pairings to try and balance the defensive with the progressive.

I think it depends on whether we look for direct cover for Dier (which would most likely be expensive) or look to cover Toby so that he could move to DM if required. Vertonghen could also do it with Wimmer having proved very able. Either way we'd have a midfielder who was able to drop between the CBs like Dier does at present, so the system isn't altered. I'd imagine that we're more likely to look for a defensive mid which would allow Dier to drop into the back 4 if Toby was ruled out. Veltman's a very good player though and fits the Poch template from what I can make out.

Exactly what I thought after posting this actually mate!

That makes no sense. What's would be the point in spending money on another CB and use Jan as a makeshift-DM if Dier got injured - instead of just using the exact same money on a back-up DM?

Because if you are looking to directly replace Diers contribution without changing the way we play it is imperative that the DM can play as a CB. How many gettable DM's are there about that are comfortable playing in the back line?
