This is the sort of game we always moan about losing when we are beating so-called big teams - the games we should win.

Then we win and still some are not happy?

I for one am happy if we can grind out these results 'cos it makes a nice change from losing them

I rest my case. What I've been saying all along... FINISHING is the friggin issue! Great win though...

Creating clear cut chances has been more the issue than finishing, Newcastle second half aside, and today for the first time we actually managed to create a gutful.

So no it hasn't been really, the issue has definitely been more to do with creating enough clear cut chances. We keep doing that consistently and the goals will start to flow.

People keep saying that Soldado would have finished the Defoe chances, but Defoe was making the runs to force the pass, we don't know Soldado would have made the same runs. Well done JD and I don't blame AVB for using him as Soldado, unluckily or not, has not hit the ground running.

There's no reason for anyone not to be happy with the result - I'm delighted as I am sure all Spurs fans are tonight

That being said it is a game we should be thinking we should win and not marvelling at the fact we won it and acting like we were amazing to narrowly win a game. AVB's comments sound like we just made history and won at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge for the first time in PL history

MANAGER REACTION- Sunderland 1-2 Tottenham

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a great win, we were outstanding. It could have been one of those situations where we were left to rue our missed chances but it wasn't.

this is what i mean... it could have... we shouldnt have left it to chance. we shouldn't have hope sunderland don't score. we should have gone and win the game. we have to go out and win games, not hope for the other team to make mistakes and not score. we have to be positive everytime we take the field. and today, after we when 2-1 up, we turn negative.

Holtby was really good today. Was constantly moving and looking for people's runs.

u guys realize its the BOTTOM TEAM in the league??? yeah we won 2-1, but it could have been 2-2...

Could have, yeah. They should have had a penalty, we should have had a penalty. It could have been 5-1.

I think Sunderland's current position still has Di Canio written all over it, in the same way that Palace have won a couple of games in a row now but are still down there. There's a fine line between trying to kill the game off and protecting the lead. We went for a third goal straight away after taking the lead, but didn't get it. Can you imagine the reaction if we'd continued to push players forward in the last ten minutes and conceded on the break?

true.. but I feel Soldado initially made more runs looking for those passes but almost no one did that to him... and he dropped his shoulders waiting for static passes and more people then began to realise he was not active...

I just feel sorry for the poor Soldier..

Defoe only looked like he was making great runs once we as a team were getting numbers forward and having the ball in position to make chances

Soldado makes runs every week but the service never arrives - today in the second half the service was there and I am sure Soldado's normal attacking runs would have lead to him receiving chances which would likely have seen him score

First half Defoe looked the same as Soldado, isolated and wasting his time that was because of his team mates playing how they've played when Soldado is up top (inverted wingers taking long shots and everyone else playing sideways slow passes)

Second half we were getting the ball forward at speed with supporting players looking to create and make things happen, Defoe benefitted from this and was able to make runs as people were looking to play him in

Very impressed with him today. Goes to show you what a goal can do for confidence. His ball into Defoe was simply delicious and deserved to be finished.

These are the sort of instances that annoy me about stats. That ball should be worth three assists on its own, and yet some dummy somewhere else is getting credited for an assist he knows nothing about!

Well, that was definitely a lot better! First time this year that we've actually played football I've wanted to watch. I thought Lennon was past it but he and Walker have been bloody magnificent both going forwards and defensively.

I'm drunk and over enthusiastic but you get the gist

gosh... can't believe so many are "happy" good result, yes, we played well, yes... but we weren't hungry for the win.

for the last 10mins sunderland where attacking and attacking, it shouldn't have happen. *sigh*

disagree all u want, but i expect us to be playing so much better against the team at the bottom of the league. we were lucky to come away with 3points. if we had conceded the equalizer u guys will be cursing all the miss chances and the times we had so much of the ball but played it around.

don't want to simply hit disagree, I too was very unhappy with us dropping deeper, we were playing well and didn't need to panic and felt we could have controllled the end of the game better but i completely disagree that we were lucky to come away with 3 points, WTF??? if we failed it was in killing the game off, and no game is easy, just look at Stokes win against Chelsea today if you need an example, 2 gritty away wins in a week, both involving coming from behind and we certainly controlled the game much better than we did at the Cottage, all in all happy with todays performance.
