This is spot on.

Dembele is fantastic at certain things, but none of them involve any end product, or transitioning into attack quickly to counter, or playing incisive passes. He could probably retain the ball for 45min in the centre circle if he wanted, but we badly need a CM like Modric.

It would change the way we play, but for the better, I think. Imo a big part of us often having full control of a game but looking turgid in attack is down to our CM.

Dembele has played his part for the last few seasons but we need more from that position now.
When Dembele finally moves on we will all be saying we need another Demebele

Is the consensus that we are getting this guy and Kovacic then?
I think that would be an incredibly optomistic consensus, even by some of our standards. I think we would be fortunate to get either and both would likely cost a pretty penny.

Would you rather Ndombele and Kovacic or either and Zaha?

I think quite the opposite, I think we'll realise theres more productive players even if they don't grab the attention with sideways shifts and pure strength.

That's a wild oversimplification of the situation. If we can find a quality CM to play where Dembele did we'll be fine. It's about replacing quality with quality, not replacing a player with the exact same kind of player.
The weird fascination with finding a near exact replica of departing players makes no sense.

I don't think anyone's expecting us to find a replacement that replicates Mousa's skill set, mate; especially as that skill set is a pretty unique one. But I don't think it's an unfair expectation that he be replaced by a player of similar quality. Players of a similar quality, or even a player with the potential to attain that level, like Ndombele, are going to cost a significant sum of money. Unfortunately, we've been told that we need to be "cute" or "creative" with the purchase of our midfield replacement/s, which is probably a synonym for "not spending a significant amount of money". So whilst I totally agree with you, mate: it is all "about replacing quality with quality", I don't share your confidence that we'll do just that and "find a quality CM" unless we either spend big or change formation (and according to ITK, neither of those option appear to be likely).

I thought we had had info suggesting changing formation is exactly what Poch intended to do

I vaguely remember an itk (maybe Herc?) stressing that Poch wants to be flexible when it comes for formation this season. We're often very predictable (especially against teams that put 11 behind the ball) and signing players who can play multiple roles will help that. Doing that would definitely point towards at least a minor formation/system change, something that is very common amongst teams at this level. I may be wrong about that itk though.
Also, I'm not sure why you think I'm confident we'll sign a quality CM? I didn't say anything like that in that post, never said anything about replacing quality with quality being an unfair expectation either.
I've definitely seen people here and other places want a "like-for-like" replacement for Dembele too. The guy whose post I replied to said pretty much exactly that, actually.

And maybe the scouts who have been asked to find players that would fit that system.
Possibly the head of scouting but even then they would just be asked to look for a player in x,y,z position all depends how close they are to the coaching staff
