I've heard it all now.

Lennon is no good because he can't strike the ball. That must mean Defoes the best striker in the world because theres not many strikers who can strike a football better than Dofoe or Hasslebaink, or Huddlestone's a better midfielder then Roy Keane.

Striking a football is an important skill (you can say its part of the fundamental skill sets) to which i fully agree but its not a deciding part of a footballers make up IMO. when assessing players theirs an accumulation of skill sets which are also important and relative to postitions eg..Dribbing, Position and Understanding, Heading and others.

When you look at how Ronaldo strikes a ball its different to how Beckham strikes it or Van Persi, but to suggest Lennon isn't a good player because he doesn't strike it as good as Beckham (or other) is wrong IMO.

Helb doesn't score many goals for Arsenal and i believe his crossing stats are not as high as Downing, does that make him a bad player? Van Persi can't head the ball is he a bad player?

Don't get me wrong, Lennon has to improve on that side of his game and should be given more time to develop his skill sets, if the board are to buy another winger it would IMO improve him more as the focus will be diverted with better balance from the flanks.

You are over simplifying what is being said. There is no suggestion that a players should be ranked on their ability to strike/connect with/kick the ball, but that it is the core component any player needs to be top class. The point is you can have any combination of skills, but without that basic technique, you won't be a top player. You can be a top player without being fast, or a great dribbler, or header of the ball, or tall or strong. But you can't be a top class player (unless defender or GK) unless you have the technical ability to strike the ball well, so you can have control over your passing and shooting etc. Every other skill set or physical attribute is an advantage, but not essential.

Look at every single midfielder or forward who has finished in the top 3, for World Player of the Year in the lst decade: Kaka, Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Henry, Shevchenko, Fifo, Becham, Raul, Batistuta, Bergakmp and Sukar. They are all diiferent types of players, some fast and strong, some big, some small, so are great dribblers and like to disply lots of trickery, whilst others don't. But what every single one of them has in commom, is that they are all great stirkers of the ball and therefore they all produce where is counts, be it a great cross, great shot, great FK or great pass.
