He is limited technically though.

Just because he can run fast in a straight line doesn't make him a good winger.

Bollocks to that. I recall the Wigan game I think where he got forward 3 or so times within the first 20 minutes and whipped in perfect deliveries taking on a couple of men within the process. Sure he's probably more effective coming from deep and overlapping but if we're desperate he is certainly a good option to have.

Assuming Harry's playing mind games, there should be no real reason why we shouldn't adopt a 4231 approach;

Friedel

Walker Kaboul King BAE

Parker Sandro

VdV Modric Bale

Adebayor

For me, if injuries to Bale and Defoe clear up, I will be disappointed if we line up in a 442 (from midfield onwards);

VdV Parker Modric Bale

Adebayor Defoe

Ditto! That 4-2-3-1 formation would be my preferred line up against Chelsea aswell!

official team news:

Bale/Defoe = doubtful
King = 50/50
Lennon = definately out

So Bale, King and Defoe all will play then - bonus!

There is no right midfield in 4-2-3-1 :up:

In a 4-2-3-1 you need width from the 3, the 2 in front of the back 4 play narrow. Bale would provide the width on the left so you would still need width on the right.

I don't think there is an out-and-out right midfielder in a 4-2-3-1, not somebody who would hug the touchline like in a 4-4-2. Width a lot of time will come from overlapping fullbacks, and luckily, we have 2 very attacking fullbacks.

I've watched every game this season and the only time i've seen him go past a man is when the ball is put on to space and he has run onto it.

If he was playing as a winger then he would be marked tighter and therefore need a some trickery to get past the opposition. I don't believe that is one of strengths.

The real width in a 4-2-3-1 comes from the full backs...see City with Richards and Clichy...

Richards is camped in the opposition's half these days.

think it depends on the players you have tbh. It wouldnt come from BAE for us, but from Bale. City play Nasri and Silva out wide and neither are real wide players. If you play to narrow then you have 5 players in the central areas of the pitch. Arsenal play the tactic with Gervinho and Walcott playing out wide and both are proper wide players.

It does depend on the players but in a classic 4-2-3-1 for us Bale could be deployed at full back...obviously there are pros and cons to this, but I agree it does depend on the players you have.

Silva roams right across the midfield and in between the lines, those three behind Balotelli/Dzeko are totally fluid.

Hopefully Terry's mindset will be affected tomorrow night after being charged and facing prosecution.

Agreed - maybe if Bale's future is at LB (im not sure anymore) then it will work. Players like Modric and VDV would work very well in this system - maybe someone like Niko could be the 3rd attacking midfielder

In terms of our players, if we were going 4-2-3-1 and selecting certain players to fit that style, you could pick:

Friedel

Walker
Kaboul
King
Bale

Sandro
Parker

Pienaar
VDV
Modric

Adebayor

id probably avoid Pienaar - hes not strong enough in an attacking sense to be played that far forward imo. Need a bigger goal threat - maybe this is a position we need to look at in the transfer window

With the news that Terry is being prosecuted, I fully expect him to score tomorrow. He always seems to when there is negative press coverage.

Mind you, the last time he did that he followed it up with a comical fuck up against the Gooners.

You could play Kranjcar but Pienaar would be a very good selection in that side IMO. Work rate and quality on the ball, much like Milner who RM normally selects in the three behind Balotelli along with Silva and Aguero.

He actually is strong enough in an attacking sense, I watched a lot of him in his Everton days. He hasn't got going at all here yet as he hasn't had a run of games but that sort of system, deployed as a wide forward would play to his strengths in my opinion.
